Jabeur Gets Retirement From Bencic In Berlin Final

The Berlin title match ended early after Belinda Bencic injured her left ankle late in the first during her final against Ons Jabeur. Bencic eventually called it a day down 6-3, 2-1.

“I just slipped, not sure how. I feel it’s something in my ankle, achilles. I’m going to evaluate it with the doctors, go home and rest,” Bencic said.

“It was a very positive week. My tennis was great. I’m happy with my level.”

Bencic had a grueling 3+ hour win in the semifinals yesterday.

“I think [Jabeur] really deserves this title and she’s playing great tennis at the moment,” Bencic said afterwards.

“I played maybe one match too much,” Bencic continued. “Four heavy three-setters maybe didn’t help my legs to be steady today. But I’m really happy with this tournament, I’m really happy with my level, and sometimes this happens. It’s kind of for sure a bittersweet moment.”

Jabeur collects her third career title and second on grass after Birmingham last year.

“I wouldn’t have wanted to play three sets against you here, Belinda. Please get well quickly,” Jabeur said.

Jabeur now goes to Eastbourne as the No. 2 seed and to play doubles with Serena Williams!
