Kvitova Powers Past Muguruza In US Open Thriller, Swiatek Advances; Favorites Gauff, Garcia Tomorrow
The great career of Petra Kvitova is still missing any kind of mark at the US Open. The 2-time Wimbledon champion moved closer to a first US Open semifinal today edging Garbine Muguruza in a 7-5, 3-6, 7-6[12-10] thriller to reach the fourth round.
Muguruza, like Kvitova has been struggling at this highest of levels, led Kvitova 5-2 in the third and later held match points. But Kvitova would storm back and take the 12-10 superbreaker.
Kvitova will now meet Jessica Pegula on Monday. Pegula reached her first US Open fourth round pulling away from qualifier Yue Yuan 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-0. Pegula took exception to missing a match point in the second to cruise in the third with a bagel set.
Three-time finalist Victoria Azarenka cruised past Petra Martic 6-3, 6-0. She’ll move on to face Karolina Pliskova who scored a 3-set win over Belinda Bencic.
“I felt that I played really well today. I put my foot on the gas pedal and never took it off. She moved me around but I felt like I put on some new tires,” Azarenka said.
World No. 1 Iga Swiatek rebounded from a 4-1 second set deficit to put away the pesky Lauren Davis 6-3, 6-4. Into her second straight US Open fourth round, Swiatek will meet Wimbledon quarterfinalist Jule Neimeier who ousted Qinwen Zheng.
“For sure it wasn’t as smooth as in first and second round,” Swiatek said after. “I’m pretty happy I made it through and could close it in second set and come back. That was pretty important for me.
Aryna Sabalenka also kept going overpowering Clara Burel 6-0, 6-2. The Belarussian will now meet feisty American Danielle Collins who toughed out Alize Cornet 6-4, 7-6(9).
Tomorrow, Coco Gauff takes on Shuai Zhang in a singles rematch of their 2021 US Open doubles final won by the Chinese veteran.
The streaking Caroline Garcia (has won 11 straight) and Liudmila Samsonova (has won 13 straight) are also scheduled. Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur is also on Ashe and Samsonova battles Ajla Tomljanovic who just retired Serena.
