Daniil Medvedev won his second title of 2022 rallying from a set down to defeat Denis Shapovalov 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the championship match in Vienna.

“I am really happy,” Medvedev said following the win. “This match was the best of the week because Denis was really playing unreal until probably 4-3 in the second set. He dropped his level by maybe two per cent and I was able to use it. This is one of the best victories when you know your opponent is on top of you, but you try and stay there and do what you can.”

The Russian collected his 15th career title though just second of the season after Los Cabos during the summer. He had lost his first three finals at the start of the year.

The win also put him back into the ATP Finals in Turin, a title he won in 2020 and finished runner-up last year. Seven of Medvedev’s 15 titles have come indoors.

“I like to play indoor hard courts at the end of the season,” Medvedev added. “I feel that I do a great job with my team not to arrive burnt out. I am looking forward to the last two tournaments of the year which are really important and I usually play well.”

With the win, Medvedev will go into Paris on a high note. He won Paris in 2020 and made the finals last year losing to Novak Djokovic.
