After years of high expectations, it’s finally coming together for Felix Auger-Aliassime. The Canadian began 0-9 in title matches but today won his third straight crown in as many weeks topping Holger Run 6-3, 7-5 to win the Basel title.

Still just 22, Auger-Aliassime has now won his last 13 matches after titles now in Florence, Antwerp and now Basel. And he won in Switzerland without dropping a set or even serve, saving all four break points he faced during the week.

“It’s been an amazing week,” said Auger-Aliassime. “Once again in the final, not getting broken all week.

“A long year, a long stretch of wins, and it’s not over. So hopefully I can keep going, but right now I’m feeling all the good emotions that come with winning a tournament. It’s amazing.”

The 19-year-old Rune was playing in his third straight final as well, though not in consecutive weeks.

“I tried to dictate the rally every time I had the chance, and it was very difficult today,” Rune said. “He served probably the best I’ve ever played against, close to the line, so precise, over 200 kilometres per hour.

“It was very tough. I got a couple of break points and he served aces, so I cannot blame myself that I didn’t break him.”

Auger-Aliassime moves to 6th in the ATP Race and virtually locked into Turin. There are two spots left with Paris next week.
