Auger-Aliassime Ousts Alcaraz In Basel, Will Face Rune In Final; Medvedev v Shapovalov In Basel
Felix Auger-Aliassime collected one of his biggest career wins confirming his red-hot run blowing past World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 6-2 to reach the final in Basel.
“I played great again,” said Auger-Aliassime. “Showing up and taking care of my serve, game after game. I think it was kind of a nervous start for both of us, but I think I was able to put a lot of pressure on second-serve return, and I think he felt that.
The Canadian improves to 3-0 against Alcaraz and he bumps his current win streak to 12. He’s won his last two events.
“I’ve been serving amazing, not getting broken once yet,” Auger-Aliassime said. “There’s still one match to go, but it’s been a fantastic week, [I have] played some great tennis, and again today against the best player in the world. It’s an amazing win, so I’m really happy with my level and hopefully I can go all the way.”
Tomorrow, he’ll face young Dane Holger Rune who has won 13 of his last 14 and his last nine overall with a 7-6(1), 7-6(6) win over Roberto Bautista Agut.
It’s Rune’s third straight tournament final with a Sofia runner-up and a Stockholm title last week.
Neither finalist has dropped a set this week and neither has even been broken.
“I guess one of us will be broken tomorrow,” Rune said ahead of his first meeting with Auger-Aliassime. “We’ll see. I hope it’s not going to be me. I’m just trying to focus. Felix has been playing some great tennis, not just behind serve, but in general. He played great tennis today as well. I’m super excited for another great final and hopefully it will be very good tennis.”
In Basel, Daniil Medvedev muscled past Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 6-2. He’ll meet Denis Shapovalov in the final after the Canadian was a winner over Borna Coric 7-6(4), 6-0.
Shapovalov is 11-3 since the US Open and this is his second final this fall after Seoul.
“I’m just happy to get through and be in another final this season, beating some top guys and great players along the way,” said Shapovalov after the match. “I’m very happy with my performances this week and today was another amazing match. Obviously, Borna’s playing some great tennis, he beat some great players this week, so really happy to win today and really happy with my game.”
