Djokovic Won Australian Open With 3cm Tear In Hamstring
According to Australian Open tournament head Craig Tiley, Novak Djokovic won his 10th title Sunday playing with a 3cm tear in his left hamstring.
“I think a lot of the challenges around Novak is he gets a bad rap but at the end of the day, I don’t think anyone can question his athleticism,” Tiley said on SEN.
“I did see he had a three centimeter tear in his hammy,” he said. Later adding that he saw the scan. “Absolutely. The doctors are going to tell you the truth.
“I think there was a lot of speculation on whether it was true or not.
“It’s hard to believe that someone can do what they do with those types of injuries, but he’s remarkable.”
As the tournament went on, Djokovic’s torn hamstring appeared to be less of an issue. And by the last three rounds, he looked fully healed.
“The good thing about the Grand Slam here is that you have a day between the matches, so it allowed me to have more time than normally on some other tournaments to recover, to try to do all the treatments in order to get myself in somewhat of a good state and condition to play and eventually win,” Djokovic said Sunday.
“From fourth round onwards, I feel the leg was not bothering me as much. I felt my movement was much better. I played some of my best tennis honestly in Australian Open. The fourth round, quarterfinal, semifinals, just really comfortable on the court, hitting the ball great.”
