Rune, Coric Advance at Montepellier; Sinner Returns Friday
The top three seeds in Montpellier have advanced to the quarterfinals of the 250 event in France. On Thursday in second round action 3rd-seeded Borna Coric eliminated Arthur Rinderknech of France 6-3, 7-5. In the match, Coric smacked 10 aces, won 34/43 (79%) of first serve points, 10/14 (71%) on second serves and never lost serve. The Croatian improves to a perfect 2-0 in tour-level head-to-head battles with Rinderknech.
βIn the second set, I just managed to break him and that was the key to the match. I also served very well today,β Coric told the crowd. βI am very happy to be here again today.β
The No. 1 seed Holger Rune topped Marc-Andrea Huesler 7-6(7-5), 6-2 beating the Swiss for a first time in three tries. Rune didn’t drop serve in the match and was led by seven aces, won 32/40 (80%) on first service points, 13/17 (76%) on second serves.
“I had a plan and I respect him a lot. I lost to him twice, but today I was super focused,” the 19-year-old Rune said on court. “I played well, aggressively and stayed calm. I think I put a lot of first serves in. I was staying close to the baseline and trying to see every opportunity to come in and move him and play aggressively and this worked pretty well.”
Frenchman Quentin Halys upended the 5th-seeded Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in straights 6-3, 6-3. Maxime Cressy of the United States via France bounced No. 7 Emil Ruusuvuori i6-4, 6-4. Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego defeated Filip Krajinovic in two sets 7-5, 6-1. He’ll now get No. 2 seed Jannik Sinner.
In quarterfinal play tomorrow, matches are Gregoire Barrere – No. 1 Holger Rune, No. 2 Jannik Sinner – Lorenzo Sonego, Maxime Cressy – No. 3 Borna Coric and also Arthur Fils – Quentin Halys.
