Marathon Murray Wins Again, Beats Zverev In Doha; Medvedev, Rublev Advance
Andy Murray is becoming the king of long matches. Today, the former No. 1 won yet another marathon needing over three hours to dispatch Alexander Zverev 7-6(5), 2-6, 7-5 to reach the Doha quarterfinals.
“It makes a big difference for the players when we come and get a lot of energy and a great atmosphere from the crowd,” Murray told the ATP. “Hopefully that continues the rest of the week, but I obviously enjoyed playing in that atmosphere tonight.”
Murray, 2-time Doha champion, will have no rest before returning tomorrow for the quarterfinals to face Alexandre Muller, a French qualifier.
“Not so familiar, but he’s obviously had a good week this week coming through qualifying. He will have played four matches now, so obviously likes these conditions,” Murray said. “My coach will obviously watch video and stuff tonight to get a bit more familiar with his game, but it’s an opportunity for me in the quarters tomorrow and time to rest up and get ready for that one.”
Elsewhere, top seeded Andrey Rublev ousted the Netherlands’s Tallon Griekspoor 1-6, 6-1, 7-6(8-6). No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev got by Liam Broady in two sets 6-4, 6-3. Second-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime defeated Jason Kubler 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. The 22-year-old Auger Aliassime finished with 15 aces and dropped serve just once.
Thursday’s schedule includes quarterfinals with Jiri Lehecka – No. 1 Andrey Rublev, No. 3 Daniil Medvedev – Christopher O’Connell, No. 2 Felix Auger-Aliassime – No. 7 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Alexandre Muller – Andy Murray.
