Second-seeded Cameron Norrie advanced to the quarterfinals in Rio besting Brazil’s best hope Thiago Montiero 7-5, 7-5.

“It was a great match,” Norrie told the ATP. “I had a lot of opportunities in that first set and I could have been a lot more comfortable but he fought back strong and played really well in the bigger moments and served really well. Credit to him, but I was able to tough out the end of the sets.”

Norrie finished with four aces, tossed in three doubles and was 5 of 21 on break chances. There were eight total breaks in the match.

Top seed Carlos Alcaraz finished off Mateus Alves 6-4, 6-4. This match was stopped yesterday at 5-3 in the second due to a thunderstorm. Today, Alcaraz served it out at 5-4.

“It was really tough,” Alcaraz said. “We had to stop the match and start again. You have to sleep with the nerves before the match and get ready. It’s not easy.”

Also, Dusan Lajovic of Serbia shocked 5th-seeded Diego Schwartzman 6-1, 6-4. No. 7 seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas won a tester over Tomas Martin Etcheverry 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. Bolivia’s Hugo Dellien upended No. 9 seed Alex Molcan in three sets 1-6, 6-2, 6-2. Fabio Fognini ousted Tomas Barrios Vera of Chile 6-2, 6-3.

And No. 6 seed Sebastian Baez knocked out the retiring Thomaz Bellucci in two sets 6-3, 6-2.

On tap Thursday, matches slated in second round action are Fabio Fognini – No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, No. 4 Francisco Cerundolo – Bernabe Zapata Miralles, No. 6 Sebastian Baez – Juan Pablo Varillas, Daniel Elahi Galan – No. 7 Albert Ramos-Vinolas, Dusan Lajovic – Laslo Djere plus Pedro Martinez – Nicolas Jarry.
