Rogers, Giorgi, Czech Teens Advance At Indian Wells; Raducanu, Collins Thurs.

The women’s draw opened Thursday at Indian Wells with the daughter of former great Hana Mandlikova, Elizabeth Mandlik, winning a thriller over Alison Riske-Amritraj in three sets 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(7-1).

American Shelby Rogers also advanced past countrywoman Katie Volynets 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.

Italian veteran Camila Giorgi ousted the Netherlands’s Arantxa Rus 6-3, 6-3. Recent Austin champion Marta Kostyuk fell to Rebecca Peterson 7-5, 5-7, 7-5.


Aliaksandra Sasnovich topped Kaia Kanepi 6-3, 7-6(7-5). Both Czech teens won as 17-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova eliminated Mayar Sherif of Egypt 0-6, 6-2, 6-3 and Linda Noskova, 18, upended Irina-Camelia Begu 7-6(9-7), 6-1.

Dayana Yastremska, Evgeniya Rodina and Jil Teichmann were also winners.

Ahead tomorrow, feature matches slated in first round play include Emma Raducanu – Danka Kovinic, Sofia Kenin – Sloane Stephens, Rebecca Marino – Marketa Vondrousova, Catherine McNally – Emma Navarro, Danielle Collins – Dalma Galfi, Jule Niemeier – Katerina Siniakova along with Karolina Muchova – Yulia Putintseva.
