Mertens, Rybakina, Keys Lead Field In San Jose
The women’s summer North American circuit starts in earnest this week in San Jose with a 50th anniversary field that features seven players in the Top 40 including top seed Elise Mertens, Tokyo semifinalist Elena Rybakina, former champion Madison Keys and recent WTA champion Danielle Collins.
In the first event in the women’s US Open Series, Alja Tomljanovic takes on Amanda Anisimova, Yulia Putintseva faces Donna Vekic, former US Open semifinalist Anastasija Sevastova battles Petra Martic, Alison Riske meets Coco Vandeweghe, Collins clashes with Shelby Rogers and former US Open champion Sloane Stephens tests Caty McNally.
If Stephens wins, she take on the Collins/Rogers victory with a chance at Rybakina.
British teen Emma Raducanu is also in the draw along with former Top 20 Dayana Yastremska who will meet 2017 Wimbledon junior champion Claire Liu.
The tournament was not held in 2020 due to the pandemic. Zheng Saisai upset Aryna Sabalenka in 2019.
