Osaka, Gauff, Rybakina Headline San Jose WTA

The WTA summer hard court season gets underway this week with two stops in Washington and a 500 level event in San Jose.

The NoCal tournament features a strong field led by Top 3 seeds Maria Sakkari, Paula Badosa and Ons Jabeur.

But the stars are 4-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka and French finalist Coco Gauff.

Also in the field are Amanda Anismova, Aryna Sabalenka, Karolina Pliskova and former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu.

Osaka and Gauff would collide in the second round with wins. Osaka meets the tough teen Zheng Qinwen while Gauff opens against the powerful Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina. Osaka is playing her first match since the French Open. She’s been battling a foot issue.

Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina makes her debut as a Slam winner against 2021 finalist Daria Kasatkina who also made the French semifinals.

Pliskova opens against Katie Boulter who beat the Czech at Wimbledon. And Wimbledon finalist Jabeur could face former champion Madison Keys in the second round.

Incredibly, Rybakina, Andreescu, Osaka and Anismova are all unseeded.

Danielle Collins won the 2021 edition topping Daria Kasatkina.
