Andy Murray Says Tennis Should Get Rid Of The Warm-Up
Is there another sport which does a warm-up minutes before play begins? Andy Murray would like to get rid of it in tennis.
“I’d probably get rid of the four-minute warmup. I’d probably do that,” Murray said yesterday at Indian Wells when asked about what rule he would change. “It would make certain things probably a little bit trickier in terms of timing, like when you warm up for the match and stuff like that, because usually players — you know, I would warm up two-and-a-half to three hours before I go on, whereas my preference would actually probably be to warm up sort of 20 minutes before you go on, but because of the way that the matches are scheduled, you know, that’s a bit trickier.”
The warm-up does add an extra 3-4 minutes at the start of every match. Players could simply walk on, toss the coin and start. The warm-up does give fans time to get in and allow electronic media time to set up the match. But those walk-on could be staggered/delayed to allow for that, though then overall time of the match wouldn’t really change.
Murray won yesterday in straight sets, a rarity for the Scot who had gone the distance in his last nine wins. He slated to face Pablo Carreno Busta but the Spaniard withdrew making way for Radu Albot.
“Usually I will sleep better,” Murray said of the earlier start and earlier finish. “If you’ve had a shorter match, there’s probably less aches and pains, so it’s easier to sleep. The day off as well becomes probably a bit more productive, because, you know, there is just less fatigue, less sort of soreness from the match. So probably able to practice at a slightly higher intensity and probably, you know, practice more specific things, whereas yesterday I just really hit a few balls, and that was it.”
Up next for Murray on Monday will be rising British star Jack Draper in a first meeting.
