Tiafoe Tops Musetti, Fritz Out In Stuttgart QFs
In the big showdown of the men’s tennis day in Stuttgart, Frances Tiafoe got revenge on Lorenzo Musetti on the grass with a 6-7(6-8), 7-6(7-4), 6-2 win over the Italian.
“He is obviously a very good player,” Tiafoe said to the ATP. “We have always had tough battles, first time on grass. He could have made it a little more straight forward for me but it is good to get through.”
Musetti had beaten Tiafoe in a three-setter on his home soil in Rome last month, but this time the American stormed back snatching the second set breaker and then running away with the win. Tiafoe finished with 10 aces and broke the 21-year-old five times.
Musetti had 17 aces but was hammered on his second serve in the decider.
Tiafoe’s buddy and American No. 1 Taylor Fritz fell to qualifier Marton Fucsovics 6-4, 7-5.
The 31-year-old Fucsovics lost just seven points on first serve while Fritz was broken twice.
Fucsovics reaches his 4th career semifinal where he’ll face Tiafoe. Fucsovics has won two of three tour-level head-to-head clashes when facing Tiafoe. But they haven’t met since Tiafoe’s win at the 2020 US Open.
German hope Jan-Lennard Struff ended the birthday dream of Richard Gasquet 6-4, 7-5. He’ll now face No. 4 Hubert Hurkacz who got over on Christopher O’Connell 6-4, 6-4. Struff won their only previous meeting back in the 2016 Davis Cup.
