Tiafoe Avoids 3, Foils Fucsovics In Stuttgart, Will Face Struff
Frances Tiafoe saved six set points in the second to avoid three sets in a tough 6-3, 7-6(13-11) win over qualifier Marton Fucsovics.
Tiafoe lost only six points on first serve and never faced a break point in the semifinal.
“I have played some solid tennis. It is one of my favorites surfaces. It is good to get out here and get some matches,” Tiafoe said to the ATP.
Into his 7th career final, first on grass, Tiafoe will take on German hope Jan-Lennard Struff.
The 33-year-old Jan-Lennard Struff took down 4th-seeded Hubert Hurkacz in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Struff had 11 aces, tossed in four doubles, lost just eight points on first serve and was broken just once, and that was in the first set.
Hurkacz pounded 21 aces but never had a break chance the last two sets.
“I am very happy,” said Struff. “Hubi won Halle last year. He is an incredible grass court player, so I knew I had to play a very good match. After starting off well I found a way and I am very happy with the win.
“The atmosphere was crazy again. It means a lot to reach my third final and second in Germany. My first in Germany was during covid and without crowd in Munich, so I am very happy my family were here.”
Struff advances his 3rd career final still seeking a first title.
Struff and Tiafoe have split their two meeting with Struff winning their last meeting at the 2020 French Open.
