Kvitova Overcomes Vekic For Berlin Title, Rises Among Wimbledon Favorites
Petra Kvitova capped off another great week of grass claiming her 31st title winning in Berlin Sunday over Donna Vekic 6-2, 7-6(8-6).
“I didn’t expect this title when the week started here. But grass is my favorite surface,” Kvitova said.
Vekic held the early break in the second but failed to serve out the set at 5-4.
Kvitova connected on seven aces, hit five doubles and was three of four on break chances.
Kvitova captures her 31st career title, 6th on grass and second this year after Miami when she beat Elena Rybakina. Vekic was seeking her 5th career title. Kvitova now leads Vekic 5-1 in their series.
The win surely vaults Kvitova into the favorites conversation at Wimbledon where she joins defending champion Rybakina, world No. 1 Iga Swiatek and Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka.
Kvitova and Venus Williams are the only women in the draw with multiple Wimbledon titles.
