Hurkacz Takes Shanghai In Thriller Over Rublev
Hubert Hurkacz collected his second Masters title of his career winning in Shanghai on Sunday edging Andrey Rublev 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(10-8) in a thriller.
Hurkacz, who won 2021 Miami, saved a match point at 5-6 in the breaker.
“It was such a battle,” Hurkacz said to the ATP. “Especially emotionally. I had a match point and Andrey hit an amazing serve and then he had a match point and then I had some match points. It was back and forth and such a tricky match. Andrey was playing some great shots. I was trying to respond. It was one of those matches and I kept believing and I am super happy with how I managed at the end.
“It is such a big tournament and so much tradition. It is a huge event and I am really happy now.”
The Polish No. 1 finished with 21 aces, won 57/71 (80%) first serves. Both players were broken once in the match. And both missed on one break chance each in the third.
Rublev actually won one more point than Hurkacz.
Hurkacz now is ahead of Rublev 3-2 in their tour-level battles. He wins his 7th career title in his 8th final, and improves to 7-1 in finals.
Rublev was seeking his 15th career title, first title since 23 Bastad (d Ruud).
