Medvedev Rallies Past Dimitrov, Tsitsipas Wins In Vienna; Sinner v Tiafoe QF
The top seeds for the most part advanced to the quarterfinals round in Vienna.
Defending champion Daniel Medvedev came from a set down to defeat Grigor Dimitrov 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
After Dimitrov grabbed a two break lead to take the first, Medvedev stormed back. The Russian went up 4-1 in the second and then broke Dimitrov at 4-all in the third.
The Bulgarian had just one break chance after breaking Medvedev three times in the opener.
“It was a great match,” said Medvedev on court. “He started really well and I was missing just a little bit too much. He was ahead and starting from the second set I started to play better, to run better, to put more balls in the court and play faster when I needed to.
“I managed to have small control of the match, but it was very tough and could have gone either way. I’m very happy I managed to do it.”
Medvedev will face countryman Karen Khachanov in the quarterfinals on Friday. Medvedev has the better of Khachanov 4-1 in their tour-level clashes. Medvedev won their most recent meeting in the semifinals at 2023 Miami Masters.
Fourth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas won a tight one over the Czech Republic’s Tomas Machac in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. The Greek had to rally from 3-1 down in the third, breaking Machac at 5-all as part of winning the last three games of the match.
Second-seeded Jannik Sinner eased past his countryman Lorenzo Sonego 6-2, 6-4. He’ll now face Frances Tiafoe tomorrow. The American recovered after dropping the first to beat Gael Monfils 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.
No. 3 seed Andrey Rublev beat Matteo Arnaldi 7-5, 6-3. The win put Rublev officially into Turin.
And Borna Gojo pulled the big upset knocking out the 6th-seeded Tommy Paul in straights 6-3, 6-4.
Gojo will now face Tsitsipas. Rublev will take on former champion Alexander Zverev.
