Collins Continues Hot Streak, Wins Charleston Over Kasatkina
There’s no slowing Danielle Collins down. With her in-your-face nature, the American is an acquired taste, one that few have actually acquired. But Collins doesn’t care. She does her job and does it well.
Today, the 30-year-old kept her career run going dominating Daria Kasatkina 6-2, 6-1 to capture to 500 level title in Charleston.
Collins had just stunned the field to win Miami a week ago, and now takes the clay event in Charleston dropping one set.
“To be able to physically battle and push myself to a new limit gives me a lot of confidence,” Collins said. “I’ve been so happy to be playing at the level that I’ve been playing [and] to be able to back it up two weeks in a row has just been fantastic.”
In this 13-match run, Collins has lost just two sets and only three of those 28 sets even got to 5-all.
“When I sign up for something or make the commitment to play an event, I really try to fulfill that commitment, unless there’s something really wrong,” she said
“I was healthy after Miami, and I was playing really great tennis, and like I said, this is a player-favorite event. This is really special for all of us, and I’ve had so many great memories here on and off the court. I won doubles here last year. I have really great friends that live here. And so it was a no-brainer to come here.”
Collins reiterated she still plans on retiring this year despite all her success.
“With my set of challenges, it’s a very personal decision,” Collins told the WTA. “And it’s great that I’ve made the decision that is best for me.”
“I’m really happy that I can showcase my best tennis in these last couple of events, because I think that’s the way I want to go out. I know everyone has a different way of retiring and ending their career, but for me, I want to try to go out playing my best tennis.”
