Alcaraz Cruises Past Korda At French Open, Sinner And Tsitsipas Win, Bad Boy Rublev Rocked By Arnaldi
Carlos Alcaraz cruised past Sebastian Korda 6-4, 7-6(5), 6-3 to reach the fourth round at the French Open.
With the rain returning again, the match was played under the Chatrier roof and Alcaraz gave the crowd a thrill. The Spaniard got 38 winners with 27 unforced while Korda had just 20 winners to 40 unforced. Alcaraz finished with five love holds as he improves to 4-1 against the American.
“Today was a more demanding match for me. At some point I forget about everything and I hit the forehand normally,” Alcaraz said to the ATP. “I think during the whole match, I hit my forehand really well, with more intensity. In the second set tiebreak I hit [some good forehands]. I miss this kind of forehand, this kind of moments. I felt really well after those shots.”
Jannik Sinner continued had some more leg niggles but rolled past Pavel Kotov 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. Sinner is now 10-0 on the year in Slams, 33-2 overall on tour.
Sinner will now face the fiery Corentin Moutet who came from a set and break down to defeat Sebastian Ofner 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-1.
Former finalist Stefanos has been quietly playing well. The Greek returned to the fourth round for a sixth straight time taking out Zhang Zhizhen 6-3, 6-3, 6-1.
“I did feel today like my tennis was formed into a very fluid game,” Tsitsipas said on court. “The ball was coming off the racquet really nicely. I was able to construct my points with patience and create some really good angles in some of the rallies.
“I was really precise in my decision making, but also in my shot placement. I felt like it was going deep, it was opening the court. It’s a great feeling when you are able to produce tennis like this.”
In the upset of the day, Italian 23-year-old Matteo Arnaldi upset No. 6 Andrey Rublev 7-6(8-6), 6-2, 6-4. In his second Slam fourth round, he’ll get Tsitsipas on Sunday.
“I was really nervous at the end because I was going to serve for the match for one of the biggest wins of my life,” said Arnaldi who has lost just one set. “But I managed it really well… I was focused on myself and doing the right thing.”
Rublev, a winner in Madrid, was furious with himself.
“Completely disappointed with myself the way I behaved, the way I performed, and I don’t remember behaving worse on a Slams ever,” Rublev said. “I think it was first time I ever behave that bad. Not much to say.”
Due to the rains, three matches were pushed to Saturday — Hubert Hurkacz v Denis Shapovalov, Grigor Dimitrov v Zizou Bergs and Ben Shelton v Felix-Auger Aliassime.
