2024 French Open Day 6: Alcaraz v Korda, Gauff v Yastremska Plus Birthday Girl Swiatek, Sinner On Chatrier
Rains have hit the French Open five straight days creating multiple delays and backlogs, but somehow, someway the tournament is still on schedule.
Friday marks the start of the third round with just 16 matches in singles, played on courts with a roof! So even if it does rain, the event won’t fall that far behind as Friday more rain is expected.
But those on Charier will be in the clear and it’s a monster line-up.
On the men’s side, Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner gets Pavel Kotov who he beat in Madrid. Sinner is 8-0 in Slams this year and 30-2 overall.
Carlos Alcaraz is back on at night in a super showdown with Sebastian Korda. It’s a fifth meeting with Alcaraz ahead 3-1 including a straight set win in the third round at the 2022 French Open.
“He’s been one of the best clay courters in the last couple of years, so it’s obviously going to be very difficult,” Korda said of the match-up. “We’ve played probably two years ago to the day, a third round, exactly. A night match as well.
“It’s going to be a fun experience and hopefully I can play some good tennis. We’ll see what happens.”
Former finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas is in action along with Grigor Dimitrov plus some good matches with Andrey Rublev taking on Matteo Arnaldi, Ben Shelton battling Felix-Auger Aliassime and Hubert Hurkacz collides with Denis Shapovalov.
The women are led by Iga Swiatek who survived a match point a big scare from Naomi Osaka on Wednesday. Swiatek, who faced Marie Bouzkova, has won her last 16 matches at the French Open and her last 14 overall.
“I think my game can get better here,” Swiatek said Wednesday. “In Australia, it’s harder for me to improve during the tournament because of the surface actually. So I’m not expecting anything. From now on I’m just going to try to focus on my tennis and whatever. Even if I’m gonna lose… I almost lost today, so I’m happy that I’m here anyway.”
Swiatek celebrates her 23rd birthday on Friday.
Coco Gauff has a good one against Australian Open semifinalist Dayana Yastremska. Gauff did just beat the Ukrainian star earlier this month in Madrid.
