Favorites Sabalenka, Rybakina Thursday Winners At French Open; Collins, Ostapenko Out
It was another easy day for the bottom half women’s favorites Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina.
On Chatrier, Sabalenka eased past 22-year-old Moyuka Uchijima of Japan 6-2, 6-2. Sabalenka never dropped serve while breaking four times.
“I’m super happy with my performance today. Happy to get this win,” Sabalenka said. “It was just incredible atmosphere out there. I was really enjoying every minute being there.
On Lenglen, Rybakina rolled by Arantxa Rus of Netherlands 6-3, 6-4. Rus actually led 4-2 in the second before Rybakina took the last four games. She finished with eight aces in the match.
There were two big surprises on the rainy day. Former winner Jelena Ostapenko was sent home by Clara Tauson 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-3 and then the red-hot Danielle Collins fell to Serbia’s Olga Danilovic also in three 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-4.

Also, former finalist and 5th-seeded Marketa Vondrousova advanced past Katie Volynets of the United States in a match that went the distance 0-6, 6-1, 6-4. 17th-seeded Liudmila Samsonova had an easy victory over former semifinalist Amanda Anisimova 6-2, 6-1. 14th-seeded Madison Keys sent out Mayar Sherif in straight sets 6-0, 7-6(7). Croatia’s Donna Vekic surprised No. 18 seed Marta Kostyuk 7-5, 6-4.
No. 15 seed Elina Svitolina eliminated France’s Diane Parry 6-4, 7-6(3), former US Open winner Bianca Andreescu ousted Jannik Sinner‘s new girlfriend Anna Kalinskaya 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 and 26-year-old Paula Badosa handled rallied past Yulia Putintseva 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.
In the late match, 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva outlasted 34-year-old Victoria Azarenka 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
