2024 French Open Day 10: QFs With Alcaraz v Tsitsipas, Sinner v Dimitrov; Swiatek, Gauff 1 Win Away
A star-studded quarterfinal line-up gets underway Tuesday at the French Open. As the singles events are down to just one court — Chatrier — the stakes ramp up.
Tuesday sees no fewer than four reigning Grand Slam champions in action
With doubles later, Coco Gauff drew the early assignment on Chatrier taking on 2-time Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur who seeks her first French semifinal. Gauff leads 4-2 but Jabeur has won three of their last four.
“I love how Coco plays, and I love how Coco talks in general. I think she’s really mature for her age. She’s really an amazing person as well,” Jabeur said. “It’s going to be definitely a difficult match. She’s such a fighter, you know, on the court. I hope I can play good and I can play my game because I know I can bother her as well.”
Tournament favorite Iga Swiatek is on next against the Wimbledon champion and former finalist Marketa Vondrousova. Swiatek has never lost to the left leading 3-0 including a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the 2021 French Open first round.
The men’s blockbuster slate features Jannik Sinner against Grigor Dimitrov with the winner advancing to their first French Open semifinal.
Sinner is ahead of Dimitrov 3-1 winning the last three. But Dimitrov on their only clay meeting back four years ago in Rome.
“I’ve been approaching every match the same way, so I think there’s not going to be any difference whoever I play, whether it’s Jannik or somebody else. Yes, clearly he’s been playing good tennis, winning a lot of matches this year. Lost to him in the final in Miami,” Dimitrov said Sunday.
“Great competitor, but so am I. Yeah, you enter into a very good place at a Grand Slam where I think we all want to be. It’s an exciting moment. It’s a good occasion. Let’s play it out.”
And at night, former finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas tangles with Carlos Alcaraz. Alcaraz has won all five meetings including a straight-set win in this round last year.
