Sabalenka, Rybakina Continues Roll, Both Into French Open QFs; 17-year-old Andreeva Advances
The favorites in the women’s draw continued to prevail as the quarterfinal line-up was set on Monday at the French Open.
Bottom half picks Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina moved to just one match from a semifinal showdown.
Sabalenka collected her 11th win in 11 tries this year in Slams easing past American Emma Navarro 6-2, 6-3.
Sabalenka is 22-0 in sets this year in Slams as she reaches her seventh straight Grand Slam quarterfinal and overall she’s 8-0 in Slam quarterfinals.
“It sounds crazy to me, to be honest, and I’m super happy that I was able to bring this consistency on the Grand Slams,” Sabalenka said. “It’s motivating me a lot to keep pushing myself a lot and to see where is the limit.”
Next for Sabalenka will be the teen sensation Mirra Andreeva. The 17-year-old held off France’s last hope Varvara Gracheva 7-5, 6-2. She’s into her first Grand Slam quarterfinal and she becomes the third active woman after Amanda Anisimova in 2019 and Coco Gauff in 2021 to make the last eight at the French before turning 18.
“It feels amazing. It’s always tough to play against a friend,” Andreeva said on court. “Against a person you know very well, I knew that it would be a tough battle – not only game-wise but mental-wise.
“I prepared myself for everything. It was a bit tough to play against a French crowd, but I’m really happy that I managed to go through.”
Rybakina cruised past No. 15 Elina Svitolina 6-4, 6-3. Rybakina broke five times including at the start of both sets to pace the win. She’ll now face Italian Jasmine Paolini who ousted Elina Avanesyan 4-6, 6-0, 6-1.
“Really happy with the performance,” Rybakina said. “She’s a tough opponent, she’s a great fighter and it’s always difficult matches against her, but I’m really happy with the way I played and the way I served also.”
