2024 Beijing Day 2: Sinner Opens Play, Osaka Wins
While the women conclude their first round, the men open play at the Beijing China Open.
The men’s event, though, is a 500 level 32-draw which means no byes and seeds start on day one. And on the first day US Open winner Jannik Sinner kicks things off against Chilean Nicolas Jarry.
Sinner has won his last 11 matches running through Cincinnati and then the US Open which gave him his second Slam title.
“I think I always try to improve,” Sinner said earlier in the week. “Doesn’t really matter the result I have, what I managed to achieve, I always try to understand myself and what I have to improve off the court and on the court, all these things.
“I’m excited to be back and play tournaments because this is what I practice for. Even in the practice sessions, I always try to understand what’s working and what’s not working. Obviously we found out that we have some areas where I have to improve. It’s all part of the process what I have. I think this is the most exciting part.”
Fellow top seeds Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev do not play on Thursday.
In the women’s draw, former champion Naomi Osaka eased past Lucia Bronzetti 6-3, 6-2 on Wednesday. Osaka spoke after about signing up with new coach Patrick Mouratoglou.
“I think the fact that he was Serena’s coach for me made me want to avoid him just because his persona is so big,” Osaka told the WTA yesterday. “Like, this isn’t rude because I found out it’s not true, but I didn’t know if he was a good coach or he coached Serena.
“Then I met him, talked to him, worked with him on the court. He absolutely is a really good coach. I’m really glad that he’s taking this project on, as well.”
Today, Karolina Muchova is the star attraction.
