2024 Beijing Day 1: Osaka Opens Play At WTA 1000
The WTA 1000 level event in Beijing opens play Wednesday in China with first round action. The 96-draw features 16 of the Top 20 players missing Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina, Danielle Collins and Maria Sakkari.
The seeds won’t take the court until Friday, but there plenty of stars in action the first two days.
On Wednesday, 4-time Slam winner and Asian icon Naomi Osaka is back on court to face Italian Lucia Bronzetti. Osaka won the Beijing title in 2019 while Bronzetti is making her first appearance at the event.
Former French Open semifinalist Amanda Anisimova is on against China’s Xinyu Wang in a battle of Top 50s.
2020 Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin is in action as well.
And in two China-USA affairs, Shuai Zhang meets McCartney Kessler in a marquee evening match. Zhang has lost her last 24 matches. She hasn’t won a match since the start of 2023.
Former semifinalist Qiang Wang takes on qualifier Alycia Parks.
The men’s event which boasts Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, and Andrey Rublev doesn’t begin until Thursday.
