Jannik Sinner made history on Sunday in New York becoming the first Italian man to ever win the US Open with a 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 triumph of Taylor Fritz.

“I did pretty well I guess,” Sinner told the crowd on court. “This title means so much, because the last period of my career was really not easy. I love tennis, I practice a lot for these stages. I understood, especially in this tournament, how important the mental part is in this sport. I’m very happy, very proud to share this moment with my team.”

Sinner entered the event under a serious drug cloud but left with the last Grand Slam of the year. And he did it dropping just two sets, defeating four Americans and doing it without his trainer and physio.

“This title for me means so much. The last period of my career was not easy. There is my team who supports me every day, the people who are close to me,” Sinner said.

The two weren’t playing top-notch tennis early as both were struggling on serve. Sinner was as advertised, using his variety offense-to-defense and net skills to get the upper hand on the 26-year-old Fritz who failed to find the mark on the forehand.

Both players elevated their serves in the second but the nerves caught up to Fritz late and the Italian went up two sets. Fritz would finally fire up the crowd grabbing a break but he failed to serve out the third. Sinner, with his first serve still untouchable, would run off the last four games of the match as he held both hands over his head starring at his coaching box in elation.

He’s just the fourth man to win the Australian and the US in the same year on hard courts joining Mats Wilander, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic who did it as recently as last year.

The 23-year-old Sinner also became just the third player to win his first two Slam in a single season after Guillermo Vilas in 1977 and Jimmy Connors in 1974.

“So many big wins for me this season, starting off with Australia,” said Sinner. “Playing so well there gave me confidence. The work never stops. I know I can still improve, as we saw today, a couple of things. But you have to be proud with what you have and the rest you have to work for it. I can’t wait for my continued process.”

“You have to be proud of what you have. The rest, you have to go for it and work for it. I can’t wait for my continued process.”

Fritz was bidding to end an 82-match Grand Slam drought for the American men. He was the first American man to make a Slam final in 15 years since Andy Roddick at Wimbledon. Of Roddick, who was among those watching in Ashe, was the last American man to win a Slam at the 2003 US Open.

“I know we have been waiting for a champion for a long time, so I’m sorry I couldn’t get it done this time,” said Fritz. “I’m going to keep working and hopefully I will get in the next time.

“Walking on the court and just hearing the crowd go crazy, just soaking in the moment of, ‘I’m walking out to play my match on Ashe in the US Open finals which is what I dreamed about my whole life,’ it almost got me emotional,” he said. “But I was just really happy and ready to enjoy the moment.”

Sinner’s win means he and Alcaraz swept all four Slams in 2024. The separation is confirmed.

This was a great win for Jannik Sinner. Sinner started strong and really put Taylor Fritz under pressure. I agree with your post for such as young player at 23 years of age to have such success is great for him. The first set resulted in Fritz being 0-2 but then replied by winning three straight games. Sinner did stay composed throughout the match and won 15 of his last 19 points, taking the first set in 42 minutes. I agree with Sinner dominance on hard courts during this year. Sinner definitely has a liking towards the hard courts as he moves quickly around the court. I think Taylor Fritz fought well against such a strong current player. The fact that Fritz didn’t win but still put up a good fight being a low ranked player is great to see for his future. The US open is such a big tournament and it was great to see how popular the coverage was throughout the final. It will be interesting to see how the tennis careers of Jannik Sinner and Taylor Fritz will go in the near future.

Congratulations to the Italian, although your nationality is not so important for this fan. Your tennis is, and you play it with power and fortitude(ok ….it is cool that you are now the most famous in your country)!

On another note the Lave rCup is happening and despite some minor boo hoo here it is gaining ground in popularity with the players. Where is an article? So much so they are talking about ranking points earned among other things. …

I enjoyed the final, Sinner was clutch, when it mattered most, Fritz family were a bit annoying shouting between every point though, but ce la vie

Alison hodge Says:

Nice link thanks Skeezer, just goes to show how popular, and how much Federer is still missed in tennis, the numbers don’t lie when it comes to achievements, but it will always be about the way he played the game, tennis died a little when he retired

^yep read that also. This will be interesting…….and possibly a 1-2 year ban? Whoa…

Alison hodge Says:

Oh dear not good, definitely not good, this is such a shame for Sinner and tennis, it. was hand cream though, so surely a 12 month ban would be punishment enough, it’s not like he ingested it, or maybe it’s more than that and I’m missing something, tennis x needs a thread….

The faker fans led by a cringeworthy Pavvy have ultimately succeeded! Pffffft.

WB – Ana is 6’0.5-1″ in US height measurement. Her husband, football great Sebastian ‘Swinesticker’ is 6’0. Fed is 6’1″. Ana of course is taller in heels, stands out on height and beauty anyways even without heels, and the happy ‘Swinesticker’ loves her in heels anyways.

Like Djokovic, she came along at a good time for Serbia. In her case, the war struggles, the brilliance on clay, and her gorgeous appearance reshaped many people’s opinions about Serbia. As sure as people were dazzled whan I was a kid with East German ice skater Katarina Witt.

I’m of two minds on Sinner. Djokovic and Fed both seem to say rules were bent for Sinner, but the levels he tested at maybe shouldn’t be flagged. And I am somewhere where those two guys are, with Djokovic the far stronger player’s rights advocate usually. Both have seen other male and female players suspended for over a year for less than Sinner’s mishap. But the nanotrace of steroid as a bad valid PED test is idiocy. It is like the FBI, DEA and Florida State police doing cocaine busts on traffic stops for “residue” and lawyers challenging the 1/1100th of one nanogram found in drivers wallets and grabbing the car to pay for cop’s picnics and golf junkets – and proving all currency batches in the Miami area had traces of cocaine on it with all the dealers handling all the coke and all the Benjamins, Grants, and 20s they got in the process.
The DEA screamed the law is the alw, but the courts sent them and other gestapo packing because the ridiculous thresh hold they had for a drug possession bust implicated just about anyone in Florida that handled money.
Too small to get high off or indicate a larger quantity was consumed. Same with Sinner. What they found in the test had absolutely no performance gain possible in the microscopic quantity found.

Forget Nole, imagine if Rafa tested positive twice?!

Sinner should have been banned immediately after testing positive, like everyone else was, his explanation that the difference was that he new immediately, within 24 hours what was the reason for testing positive is even more damming, of course if one uses his brain instead of “neutral and objective” MSM informations.

Of course, if you are backed by Nike, Rolex, Gucci …. that don’t want to lose their golden goose you are safe, particularly looking at London based law firm they engaged to represent their client, not everyone can afford it.
His main barrister Jamie Singer was and stil heavily involved in tennis and was actually representing the other side before too, including ITIA, how convenient 😉

“…regulators such as the Grand Slam Board of tennis and the International Tennis Integrity Agency…”?!

^^^…..not to forget that having two Italians as Chairman and CEO of ATP helps too.

Before someone says that ATP has nothing to do with the case, ATP has everything to do with it,since the end of BIG 3 they are entering dark ages of tennis (like when Romans had enough of Britain and left it after bringing them civilisation), they desperately need rivalry, downfall in interest for tennis is inevitable.

Wog Boy Says:

CF1,

Thanks for reply, good read indeed.

When it comes to Sinner I just don’t buy all “logical” explanations produced by him (in fact by his legal team.
Drug testing is designed to trace minimal amounts of drugs in the body for a reason, some drugs have very short life, like the one he tested for and exits body quickly, that’s why that PED, was and is popular. It could well be on the way out of the body when detected for all we know?

I don’t have a problem with him being cleared, bit he should have be banned until that time came like everyone else was. His explanation of being able to explain within 24 hours how the drugs came into his body is strange, he knew the source but yet he tested twice positive in the space of 10 days, really and yet he kept both of culprits with him until he was cleared and then he was adcied) to sack them. Things just don’t add up for me.
You do remember dumb Troicki who asked not to be tested in the evening and came next morning to be tested just to find out that he is suspended (for refusing drug test?!) and later banned for 24 months reduced on 18 after appeal (?). Test doctor (russian or ukrainian) denied that she gave him permission to come next morning, they believed her not him.

Just to finish, I don’t think WADA will succeed, Sinner has powerful backers, but at least WADA tried.
I would look hard at Darren Cahill too, for a reason.
