Alcaraz Stays On Top Of Sinner To Win Thrilling Beijing Final
The best new rivalry in tennis lived up to the hype once again as Carlos Alcaraz bested Jannik Sinner in a thrilling Beijing final 6-7(6), 6-4, 7-6(3).
The win moved Alcaraz to 6-4 against Sinner and 3-0 this year, handing the Italian world No. 1 half of his six losses. And it snapped Sinner’s 15-match win streak.
“He could in two, I could win in two, he could win in three. It was a really close match,” said Alcaraz to the ATP. “He showed that he’s the best player in the world, at least for me. The level that he’s playing, it’s unbelievable. It’s a really high quality of tennis. Of shots, physically, mentally, he’s a beast.”
Alcaraz dropped the opener from a break up and was up a break in the third. And then was down 3-0 in the final set breaker before running off the last seven points.
“I never lost hope,” said Alcaraz. “Honestly I knew that every tie-break Jannik plays is almost to his side. I thought that in the third set, I’m not going to lie, 3-love down, two mini breaks for him. So I didn’t lose hope, but I thought, ‘Okay, I have to give everything that I have just to try to give myself the opportunity to be close.’
“I played great points just to make 3-all and after that I just thought to go for it. If I lost it, at least I went for it. So that’s all I thought in that moment.”
The two best in tennis — they split the four Slams this year — have now gone the distance in all three of their meetings in 2024.
“It’s always nice to be part of these kind of matches. Obviously disappointed it didn’t go my way. These kind of matches can really go both ways. But it was not my day,” said Sinner. “He played better in important moments. That’s it. I’m proud again of a great week, making finals here. Last year I won here. For sure it’s a place where I love to play, so I’m already looking forward for next year.”
