Zverev Rolls Past Humbert To 7th Masters Title In Paris
Alexander Zverev closed the 2024 Masters season in the best way collecting his first Paris Indoors title thumping French hope Ugo Humbert 6-2, 6-2.
The win was Zverev’s 7th at the Masters level and 23rd of his career.
“I knew I had to play like this to win today,” said Zverev to the ATP. “Ugo is an incredible player, but here in Paris, he plays even better than he usually does and I knew that. Once the crowd gets involved, it’s going to be difficult. So, I had to take that away early, and I did, so I’m happy about that.
“It was not 100% guaranteed that I would be back at this level after Roland Garros two years ago, when I basically broke everything possible in my ankle. So, to win this title here in Paris means the world to me, and I’m sure it means everything to those in my box, because they have done so much for me.”
Humbert had won his last 14 matches indoors in France including a stunner over Carlos Alcaraz earlier in the week. But the lefty, appearing in his first Masters final, had now answer for Zverev.
“I’m extremely happy to have played in this final,” Humbert said. “To have my family and team with me the whole week has been incredible. It’s for moments like this why I do this every day, why I train.”
Zverev will now head to Turin as a strong favorite to win a third year-end title.
“I think for Turin, everybody becomes motivated. It’s such a special tournament. It’s such a special atmosphere and feeling when you’re there and only eight players in the world are there.
“So you feel special already playing there, so I think everybody is motivated. Everybody wants to win this title and play good tennis.”
