2024 Paris Masters Day 4: Zverev v Fils, Alcaraz v Humbert; Medvedev, Americans Out
More upsets hit the final Masters of the 2024 season in Paris on Wednesday. Daniil Medvedev fell in a final set breaker to Alexei Popryin 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(4).
Popyrin led 4-1 in the third but hung on for another win during this breakout season for the Australian. Medvedev will go into Turin with no finals since Indian Wells and one semifinal since Wimbledon.
“First rounds are always very tough for me, because now the matches I was winning before maybe 3-3, I cannot do it anymore,” Medvedev said. “Every match I play I have to fight. I have to win 7-6 in the third. And sometimes I lose.”
Alexander Zverev opened with a strong win over Tallon Griekspoor 7-6(2), 6-3. His fourth win over the Dutchman this year earned him a spot in the final 16, a stage he’s now reached at all nine Masters events in 2024.
Zverev will now face Arthur Fils tomorrow. As for the other Frenchmen, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard saw his run end to Karen Khachanov while Arthur Cazaux stunned Ben Shelton.
Americans over went 0-4 with Jack Draper also knocking out Taylor Fritz. No American men remain.
Thursday will also see the return of favorite Carlos Alcaraz who faces the French lefty Ugo Humbert. Draper also takes on Alex de Minaur who with a win will move into 8th in the race for Turin.
