2024 Paris Masters Day 5: Alcaraz Upset In October Surprise; Zverev v Tsitsipas
Just one of the Top 8 players remain at the Paris Masters, and that’s Alexander Zverev.
Today, Carlos Alcaraz‘s struggles continued at the event as the favorite fell to Frenchman Ugo Humbert 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 in a round of 16 encounter.
Alcaraz still has never gone beyond the quarterfinals in the indoor event.
“I think I could play better,” Alcaraz said after. “I think that’s obvious. With the level that I had today, I think I compete, I gave everything. You know, I fought until the last point.
“I have to congratulate Ugo. I think his performance has been really high. You know, the way he hits the ball is unbelievable. It’s amazing.”
Humbert collected what he called his biggest career win.
“I went for every shot,” the lefty said. “That’s why I think I had less energy in the second set and in the third it was a mountain that was with me from the beginning of the third set to the end. I trusted myself in big moments and I made some big shots.”
Elsewhere, Alexander Zverev down young French star Arthur Fils in three.
In the Turin race, Alex de Minaur topped Jack Draper to move to eighth. And Grigor Dimitrov also went the distance and going to a final set breaker topping Arthur Rinderknech to stay alive.
Tomorrow in the quarterfinals, Humbert takes on Jordan Thompson, Holger Rune daces de Minaur, Dimitrov gets Karen Khachanov and Alexander Zverev faces Stefanos Tsitsipas.
