Home tournament favorite Jannik Sinner got off to a perfect start at the ATP Finals in Turin, Italy, by dismantling Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-4 in just under 90 minutes.

Playing his first tour-level match in a month, Sinner dropped just six points on serve to win his eighth match against the Australian in eight tries.

“It’s a great start for my side for this event, for this tournament, considering I haven’t played for four weeks an official match,” Sinner said.

“He was close also today in some moments. I managed to go away in the first and also in the second set. But if this is not happening and I don’t break him back on 2-1, it goes 3-1, the set can be over quite fast, so.

“I’m just happy because it’s a very tough match against him in any way. But let’s see what’s coming in the next times when we play against.”

I had in the beginning some moments, which is normal, and then I found myself on the court, which I’m very, very happy.

Earlier, American Taylor Fritz caused a mild upset defeating former winner Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-3. Fritz saved all three break points in the win. He levels his head-to-head with the Russian 1-1.

“I thought I played a really solid match,” Fritz said. “I served well. You have to hit your spots very well on the serve against him because he’s such a good returner.

“A lot of times you can hit a good serve and he’ll still get it back. I did a great job at kind of getting free points, then hanging in some tough rallies, being solid, kind of just showing him that I wasn’t going to make too many unforced errors or just give it to him.”

Medvedev was stricken by three straight double faults at one point in the first set.

“Today actually I had my chances. I’ll have them the next matches. If it doesn’t work out, I go on holiday. I’m happy,” Medvedev said.

Tomorrow, Carlos Alcaraz takes the court against Casper Ruud. Alcaraz leads 4-0. And Former winner Alexander Zverev faces Andrey Rublev for a 10th time. Zverev is ahead 6-3 but they haven’t met since the Finals last year.
