2024 ATP Finals Day 5: Sinner v Medvedev; Alcaraz OK In Win, No 3-Setters Yet
Four days are done at the ATP Finals and the tournament is still seeking its first 3-set match.
Wednesday say both Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev win in straight sets.
Alcaraz shrugged off an earlier upset stomach by easing past Andrey Rublev 6-3, 7-6(8) for his first win of the week. The Spaniard never faced a break point while dropping just seven points on first serve.
“Today was a pretty good match,” Alcaraz said. “I felt great on the court.
“He played a really good tennis. Obviously Rublev is a really tough player, aggressive one. I tried to play a really good tennis, tried to dominate the match as much as I can, try not run as much as I can.”
Rublev falls to 0-2 and in five trips to the event is stuck on just four wins.
Two-time champion Alexander Zverev moved closer to a semifinal berth topping Casper Ruud 7-6(3), 6-3.
“I think I played very, very good in important moments,” Zverev said. “I think I’ve had a few situations where I was 15-30 down on my serve in the first set. I thought I got rid of the situations quite well. Especially I thought there was very good tennis in the tiebreak. I’m pleased with that.
“I thought it was a very high-level match. I don’t remember Casper serving this way ever. I think he had 92% first serves in the first set. This number is something I’ve never seen before.”
Tomorrow, two semifinal spots will be filled as Jannik Sinner returns to face Daniil Medvedev and Taylor Fritz and Alex de Minaur start the day.
If Sinner wins, he takes the group. If Medvedev wins and Fritz wins, then it’s a 3-way tie and sets will decide things among the three.
