The top two players in the world collide Sunday night in Melbourne for the Australian Open men’s title. Jannik Sinner will seed a second straight Australian Open title while Alexander Zverev will try to get that monkey off his back and win that first Grand Slam title after two tough losses.

Sinner rolls in having won 20 straight matches on hard courts at the Grand Slam level and he’s won 20 overall matches since losing to rival Carlos Alcaraz in Beijing. He’s been the clear best on hard courts after sweeping both Slams on cement last year among his eight titles.

Zverev is no slouch having reached his third Slam final after cruising to this final. The German who was second only to Sinner in terms of hard court match wins in 2024.

Head-to-head, Zverev has caused problems for the Italian taking four of six including their most recent Slam meeting a marathon 5-set win at the 2023 US Open fourth round. They also went over three hours in the Cincinnati semifinals with Sinner winning.

“Look, I think Jannik has been the best player in the world for the past 12 months,” said Zverev on Friday. “There’s no doubt about it. Won two Grand Slams. Has been very, very stable in those regards. So definitely one of the best players in the world.”

But Sinner is 0-2 against Zverev on hard courts in best-of-5.

“We’ve had some very tough matches in the past. Everything can happen,” said Sinner. “He’s an incredible player. He’s looking for his first major. There is going to be a lot of tension again, but I’m happy to play in this position. Sundays are always special days in tournaments, and I’m going to enjoy it.”

Sinner wasn’t at his best in wins over Ben Shelton and Holger Rune physcially struggled in both. He did destroy his pidgeon Alex de Minaur.

Zverev only need a set before Novak Djokovic retired with his hamstring, but overall Zverev hasn’t been tested.

skeezer Says:

Sinner is flat out dominating now. Congrats on his 3rd GS and 2nd consecutive AO title. These younger guys like Sinner, Alcarez, etc. are already stacking up Slams. The future is bright with the young guns of Tennis.

To Z; You are good enough. #2 in the world, finalist in a GS, the next step is closer than you think. It’s not like you’re at the bottom of the ladder. All the best keep it going.
