Novak Djokovic: My Wrist Is Fine, Hopefully It Can Stay That Way
Top seed Novak Djokovic put to rest any injuries fears Saturday during a pre-Wimbledon presser. Djokovic sent a scare to his fans when he withdrew from a exhibition earlier in the week because of the wrist, but he says everything is “fine”.
“Right now I don’t feel any pain,” Djokovic said. “But I felt like, you know, when I’m changing surfaces, especially from clay to grass, in the opening few days of the practice here got a little bit of a strange sensation in the wrist. Now it’s fine, so hopefully it can stay that way.”
That should be good news for Novak who hasn’t won a Slam since the 2013 Australian Open. He’s also coming off a crushing loss in the French Open final to rival Rafael Nadal, but remains positive.
“It’s not the first or the last final that I lost,” Djokovic said. “I’m aware of the fact that as a tennis player playing more or less week after week, the big events you have to get used to winning and losing. It’s part of the sport.
“On the other hand you need to balance and try to have some recovery time,” he said of his time off after the French. “Some downtime, which can recharge your batteries mentally most of all. That’s what I got, so now I’m very motivated to play Wimbledon.”
With Boris Becker returning to the site of his most successful event, Djokovic will open his 2014 Wimbledon campaign Monday against Andrei Golubev. Novak lost to Andy Murray in the final last year.
