Rafael Nadal: My Wrist Is Almost 100% Recovered!

In his first match in almost three months, Rafael Nadal looked sharp in a 64, 60 win over Richard Gasquet Tuesday in Beijing. After the match, Nadal admitted that his right wrist still isn’t 100%, but it’s close!

“Is almost recovered 100%,” Nadal said of the right wrist he hurt in July. “I cannot say ‘100%’ because when you have some feelings on it when you warm up at the beginning, it’s not hundred percent. But let’s say 90 something percent.

“The most important thing is the wrist is not limiting me to play my tennis, to hit the normal backhand. At the same time the doctors told me there is no risk. Well, always there is a risk, but is not a real risk to stay by the game from the same thing. So happy for that.”

Once Nadal does feel 100% in that wrist, then how good will he be? Nadal will play tonight in the second round against German qualifier Peter Gojowyczk.

Nadal also offered his thoughts about what turned out to be a very surprising US Open, won by Marin Cilic over Kei Nishikori.

“Seriously I didn’t see a lot of matches,” said Nadal. “I was watching little bit of the final. I watched a little bit of the semifinals. But in general I was not following daily.

“Is surprise that Marin and Kei were in the final? Yes. If we think about what happened the last 10 years, yes. But in theory, not,” he said. “They are great players. They played great. They deserve it. At the same time I think for the tour always is good to have new faces winning important things.”

Anna Says:

Wow ! Now isn’t that amazing Rafa …..you managed to win, and hey presto – your wrist is almost back to normal!!!! I wonder what planet you come from?????

Hippy Chick Says:

Anna im confused are you a different Anna from the one that used to post that was a Rafa fan sorry just curious??

Anna Says:

Hippy Chick : Yes I am – have never been a Rafa fan, and certainly don’t indent to become one!

Giles Says:

Anna. You really have to keep up to speed on Tennis X before making sarcastic comments.

Hippy Chick Says:

Fair enough just asking,no need for the snarky undertone though….

Humble Rafa Says:

The actual % of my fine wrist condition varies depending on the weather and how the match goes. It usually fluctuates between 0 and 100%, for those of you keeping score.

Uncle Toni wants to release an app so you can get updates on such important matters. But being the Humble gentleman that I am, I am not interested in making money. I will give you frequent updates via press conferences.

Stay tuned!

Polo Says:

Hippy Chick, just smile and let Anna be. She was just venting her frustration that Nadal is back and winning again. It must be a big disappointment to her that just when she thought Nadal is out of the way, here he comes threatening to start taking titles away from whoever she may be rooting for.

skeezer Says:

This guy wants to tell everyone his injury status drama, and his sympathy card is over reaching again. He is compelled again to let the media know his “feeling” status.
Like players or fans care. Such a drama queen. Can you play? Great. Give the fans a show. You can’t? Stfu and hope you get better soon so you can getback to your fanatstic play.
Its obvious his wrist is fine and good enough to compete. He just gave Gas a Bagel with his win.
Hee haw tweedle dee. So happy to see newer younger guys coming up who just play tennis and leave excuses behind..now that is a pro athlete!

Okiegal Says:

Guess what the first question was directed to Rafa in his presser?……”How did the wrist feel out there today”?…….just saying…..

Hippy Chick Says:

Okiegal well exactly so what is he supposed to say?anything negative and people cant wait to pounce, anything positive like what he did for Li Na and nobodys interested pftt,so what else is new?

Hippy Chick Says:

Thanks Polo :-))….

Okiegal Says:

@Chick……it’s annoying, to say the least….Oh, well…..He is one set and a break up in the second against Gojo, so hope he can keep it going and win his 2nd match!! He better, I’m losing a nights sleep because of it!! Lol

Hippy Chick Says:

Okiegal well hes playing absolutely crap,Rafa at his best wouldve converted all those BP oppotunities….

Hippy Chick Says:

Rusty deffinetly rusty….

Okiegal Says:

You are right, Chick, he’s not looking as good as he did in the first match, for sure. He has lots of miss hits and his break points are lacking. Put this away….please…I’m sleepy!! Lol

Hippy Chick Says:

Unlike RZ im not seeing Rafa as a shoo for the final,Klizan is a big hitter that has troubled Rafa in the past….

Okiegal Says:

Things a little out of kilter today, but Gojo wasn’t going away…..a hard hitter. Rafa only had 2/13 bps…..gonna have to do better in that dept, me thinks!!

@Chick……u r right, not a shoo in!

Hippy Chick Says:

By contrast young Charlton Heston looks pretty good so far against Cuevas….

Hippy Chick Says:

Did feel for Robredo this week, all that tennis last week, and back to back matches this week, where some players get a day off in between and havent played for weeks, unfair shedualing IMO?….

Hippy Chick Says:

lol scoreboard cannot seem to keep track….

alice Says:

Anna what planet do you come from that you think yourself so superior that you can judge someone over their injuries or illness as if you were god. It must be so wearying to carry around the burden of that omniscience. The attitude towards a great champion displayed by many here really is sickening. And what is clear is that it is a mirror – it only reflects back on the people who make these absurd and utterly childish comments – it doesn’t say anything at all about one of the game’s greatest champions who is frankly leagues above this kind of pettiness and spite.

roy Says:

”Guess what the first question was directed to Rafa in his presser?……”How did the wrist feel out there today”?…….just saying…..”

attempting to use reason on this board is futile, my friend.

remember, nadal habitually fakes injuries and takes months of tour, losing ranking and money … just to excuse losses or complain … or something.

truly, that is the level of thinking displayed here.

and it’s getting noticeably worse as nadal tracks down the 17.

see, if he gets the 17 he’ll be undisputed. he’s missed that many slams now, it would be worth far more than federer’s 17. and the little feddybears are still upset that federer had the dream draw and still couldn’t win the usopen … honestly that was very cruel of fed, leading them on like that.

Hippy Chick Says:

Alice fantastic post.
Roy also well said, agree with your post right upto the last paragraph….

alice Says:

@roy. yeah right…the player who is universally described by the greats as probably the greatest competitor ever, the greatest fighter just takes a pass for the hell of it. if he was a faker or wanted excuses why didn’t he do that during the biggest challenge of his career? ie when he was losing final after final to Nole. he fought and fought and just when he turned it round oh yes..that’s right he pulls out for 7 months!! this is the guy who in a recent poll everyone – both ex players and commentators voted as the player they would choose to play for their life.
I think there is a level of commentary attached to Rafa which is so irrational and extreme that it is pretty much pathological – he doesn’t have to be your favourite but to demonise him in these terms speaks volumes about the subjectivity of the person concerned.

Hippy Chick Says:

Alice again well said,fantastic post,please stick around….

alice Says:

@Hippy Chick..thanks loads…! I never normally post on these sites as I hate the level of vitriol and childishness that some people go in for. But today I just lost my temper….I do love Rafa and it’s horrible when he is injured so much so that the pettiness of these comments is just insupportable. Why are people so monolithic in their outlook? I love Rafa but I also really like Nole, Fed and Delpo..will be great when Delpo comes back to the tour, the ATP needs him around.

Hippy Chick Says:

Alice yeah completely agree,i also love Rafa, but i like all the players you mentioned too,and respect their individual achievements,i dont see the need to put them down to make me feel better about Rafa, but when people needlessly put Rafa down then i will defend him well try to anyway?agree about Delpo, and Murrays my second favorite….

Hippy Chick Says:

Attempting to use reason on this board is futile?best quote of the day there….

Daniel Says:

On paper Nadal should be in the final. He won’t be loging to Berdy that’s for sure and betting he will lose to Klizan or Isner, humm.

The other side is interesting with Djoko x Dimi and Murray x Cilic. That would be good gauge for who ever reaches final on that side. Another Djoko x Murray would be greta but Djoko playing the new Cilic would be great as well. Of course, best of 3 Dimi can upset Djoko if he is On but very likely the way Djko likes this courts.

Feeling we’ll watch a rematch of last year’s final.

RZ Says:

@Hippy Chick – Klizan can certainly cause Rafa trouble, especially if he has a good day. But he’s been so inconsistent that I have a hard time seeing him win that match.

Hippy Chick Says:

RZ well if you think so fair enough, but im not going to be hung out to dry for saying hes a shoo for the final,as i said to you and Jane on the other thread,i dont have any high expectations this early on in his come back, hes playing so that will do for now, never won Shanghai,Paris or the WTFs so im not holding my breath….

RZ Says:

@Hippy Chick – this is the Tennis-X blog. The likelihood is that someone’s going to hang us out to dry regardless of what we say and what happens!

Hippy Chick Says:

RZ True lol,but at least Rafa fans wont be -for a change?

Hippy Chick Says:

Giles thanks for the link,a crystal tiger eh,well my home is filled with crystals, and they ward off negativity, heres hoping it works for Rafa….
