Tennis-X Davis Cup Picks and Pans for This Weekend
Let’s get ready to ruuuuuummmmmbbbbbbblllllllleeee!
ADHEREL
Lots of great Davis Cup first round matches this weekend — actually, starting Thursday night if you’re in the U.S. Let’s take a look.
Japan at Great Britain
Andy Murray’s off time and a possible sidelining injury to Kyle Edmund has thrown a wrench in the Brit plans. But Japan doesn’t have a solid No. 2 player either backing up Kei Nishikori, so this one will be interesting.
Murray leads Nishikori 5-1 in their head-to-head, but which Murray will show up? Nishikori should be tough on the indoor hardcourt.
Kazakhstan at Serbia
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, Viktor Troicki and former doubles world No. 1 Nenad Zimonjic will decimate world No. 79 Mikhail Kukushkin and his visiting crew on the indoor hardcourt.
Switzerland at Italy
No Roger Federer and no Stan Wawrinka make Switzerland a sad country.
Andreas Seppi will try and lead his non-Top 50-ranked countrymen on the indoor red clay against Swiss fill-ins Marco Chiudinelli and the rest of the Swiss crew ranked outside the Top 100. This will be another ugly toss-up.
Argentina at Poland
The Polish indoor hardcourt should not be enough to deter the Argentines, who are not overwhelming with Leonardo Mayer, Guido Pella and Carlos Berlocq, but they face a Polish team with one player in the Top 100 in Jerzy Janowicz.
Janowicz has played only one match this year. His teammates Kamil Majchrzak and Lukasz Kubot are ranked outside the Top 300. Good luck with that.
Canada at France
France has two Top 10 players in Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Richard Gasquet, along with Gael Monfils and Gilles Simon. Canada is missing top player Milos Raonic, and also doubles star Daniel Nestor.
The math isn’t good for Canucks Vasek Pospisil and challenger-level players Frank Dancevic and Philip Bester. Maybe save some Air Canada plane fare and just stay home for this one.
Czech Republic at Germany
Oh for a Boris Becker, Michael Stich or even an injured Tommy Haas.
Czechs Tomas Berdych, Lukas Rosol and Radek Stepanek are going to come into Germany and kick some ass and take some names. And those names will be Germans Philipp Kohlschreiber, teen Alexander Zverev and Dustin Brown, who will have a sad one at home.
USA at Australia
Apparently Sam Groth is substituting in for the sick/injured Nick Kyrgios in singles, tilting this former toss-up tie toward the U.S. John Isner, Jack Sock and the Bryan brothers will lead the U.S. on the grass at Kooyong.
It was thought that Aussie captain Lleyton Hewitt might step in if Kyrgios couldn’t play. Will Hewitt insert himself? Now it looks like Bernard Tomic, who might have a wrist injury, will attempt to carry the weight with Groth.
Croatia at Belgium
Belgium took advantage of a dream draw and opponents’ injuries to reach the final last year. This year they’re out first round.
Waffles David Goffin, Kimmer Coppejans, Ruben Bemelmans and Arthur de Greef will be no match for former US Open champion Marin Cilic and rising teen Borna Coric.
