Djokovic Faces 18-Year-old Krajinovic; Federer Holds Court in Estoril

Wow, the only two guys I thought could pose a challenge to Federer are out. Wow.

Ljub and Monfils both withdrew from Estoril? That’s too bad; hope both are in shape for the French, especially Monfils, who often plays well there. Oh well, easier title for Fed to grab then.

The Serbian event is shaping up to be quite interesting; I wonder if Novak will get by this young hottie? Also Gasquet versus Isner could be a good match. I think Wawa will likely beat Troicki, but then again he dominated in his last match. I think Querrey is still in contention there too.

Some tough competition left at the Munich event – who could win there? I am glad to see Cilic doing a little better; he’s had a couple of early round losses now, so it’s good if he can turn that around. Hard to say who’ll come through: Berdy, Kohls, Nico, Cilic, and Baggy too. Hmmm.

LOL :-) This event used to have some pretty household names in the field back then, but now it’s slowly but surely becoming a joke…

Fed has been holding easily his last 2 service games whereas Clement hasn’t; Fed should break here or win the tiebreak. To me, Clement is looking a little tired already.

I think Clement got distracted by a bad miss and then blamed it on a flash, lol, and then went completely off the boil. He may’ve eeked out a set, but you could tell Fed was getting warmed up. I really don’t think Clement had a chance to win. Fed is just better. ; ) That said, credit to Clement for hanging with Fed shot-for-shot throughout the first set; it was entertaining.

Well, that 2nd set may have been a bit of a letdown for Clement, but still, he played his part today… Whether he would’ve won it or not doesn’t really matter now as the match is over, but had he won that 1st set, you never know… Especially with this “kind” of Federer you certainly don’t ;-) Anyway, Roger looked much better in the 2nd, and in the end got the win rather easily – and that’s all what counts for him…

Montanes won’t be an automatic win for Federer in the semis

The guy won this tournament last year and is a rough customer on clay. Federer will lose if he plays like he has in his first two matches, but I expect him to raise his game.

Great quarter finals in Belgrade: both Isner vs. Gasquet and Troicki vs. Wawrinka went the distance, lasting almost 3 hours each! I guess in the Wawrinka vs. Isner semi it’ll be a war of attrition, the winner will be whomever can bounce back more easily. I was kind of hoping for a Gasquet win today, alas. Next up Querrey vs. Andreev.

Some comments from Fed:

Federer kept a perfect record of 7-0 at the tournament after defeating former Top 10 player Clement, now ranked 83rd, in their first meeting in four years.

Federer leads 7-3 in the series against the man who stopped him twice at the Australian Open early in his career, having won their last six matches.

The opening set under cloudy skies and amid chill temperatures was combative, with Federer needing to come back from a break in the opening game, which he got back in the fourth for 2-2.

He still required 68 minutes to win the opener in a tiebreak, though, after saving a Clement set point.

Once the initial hard work was done, Federer lifted his game in the second set, finding his range and going up two breaks.

The world number one took home the victory on his second match point after just over 90 minutes.

“In the second set I could open up a bit and take a few chances, I learnt from the first set,” said Federer, recovering his form after an opening-round loss last week in Rome. “I was finally able to put him away.

“Arnaud is tough, I’ve always struggled with him. He knows what I like and what I don’t like so much.”

Have just watched the first few games of Krajinovic vs. Djoko, and this kid is good! He moves well, hits well off both backhand and forehand sides, decent at net, can transition between defence and offense well, etc.

If Roger feels this about Clement,I wonder how he thinks about the prospect of playing an invincible-looking Nadal either at Madrid or RG. Another humiliation a la the 2008 RG final can not be ruled out. Nadal,more than anybody else, knows about Roger’s likes and dislikes and ,more importantly, exposes and exploits his weaknesses more consistently and effectively than any other player especially on clay. Given the way Roger is playing, he will be extremely vulnerable against many other players too and a match against Nadal on clay may not materialize at all this season.

Krajinovic wins the first set. Djoko is having one of his days. The announcers say he is suffering from allergies and would’ve not played the tournament but stayed in it because it is his home event – probably felt a bit of pressure to play it since his family own it.

CRAP – he just retired. First time in over a year but he won’t hear the end of it. Even though others withdraw or retire, Nole’s reputation for doing so precedes him. : (

Sigh. Oh well. Hope he rests, feels better and plays well at the big events coming up.

And I hope either Sam Querrey or Krajinovic win this event.

Hi OllyK, yes I heard after the last match that there is something else besides allergies bothering Novak, but again nothing specific. Anyhow, it would be nice to know. I feel badly for Duro and sar, but as you say, they will still have fun and get to meet for the first time, plus they will get to see the up and comer Krajinovic. : )

Hi, jane! I’m wondering why is Novak always so misterious about his health issues. For example, he’s never said he had asthma, breathing problems, etc. From the beginning we are guessing what is wrong with him…On the other hand, we all KNOW that Nadal has problems with knees, so what? It doesn’t change anything…
I don’t believe that Duro will be satisfied with watching Krajinovic as a no1 die hard Nole’s fan. ;) But he will have great time in Belgrade with sar that’s for sure. None comes back from Serbia disappointed. ;)

I think Djokovic keeps things to himself nowadays as a PR precaution. I just hope it doesn’t backfire. The media will jump all over him no matter what but by keeping his mouth shut, they’ll be open to speculate the most ridiculous things, and that could be hard on Novak. If he can handle it, then I agree with his decision to keep things to himself. Everyone’s got something going on with them, no need to spill all. I just hope whatever it is, Djokovic recovers, regroups, and gets back to form.

I know he’s been having shoulder problems since end last year, and they were bad for the Davis Cup. But this seems more like asthma or respiratory.

LOL, it’s always the same thing isn’t it with you jane? Whenever, it’s Djokovic that’s involved, and/or the subject matter of any topic that will throw a bad light on him? In those instances, you’ll not hesitate to dig up any trivialities/ dirt on other players just to make your fave look good, or not so bad.

The fact of the matter is he retired, and he retires often (which is the topic here not DelPotro), so why the comparisons? If I remember correctly, you stated a while back that you weren’t aware of Djokovic’s shoulder problems, when Todd Martin was being blamed for his serving woes. And, to add insult to injury, you make the diagnosis (as though you’re positive) that his problems are molre respiratory e.g., asthmatic, even though he’s not stated such at any time, (if my memory serves me correctly) that he has asthma. From where do you pull this information?

Some people keep this as a part of their strategy. Its gamesmanship. Nothing wrong with that if the rules allow it. The next time these two guys face each other, Djoker knows that if he played hard (and not have respiratory issues), he may have turned it around and won. And the kid will have doubts in his mind as he didn’t beat (was not allowed to) the world number 2 comprehensively/completely last time. Seeds of doubts sown already.

Its just some (or majority) of the tennis fans think that players should lose gracefully (they shud fight hard no question about that). If you are not fit enough to play; don’t play.

I was talking about today and I did not “make the diagnosis.” It’s what has been written in post-match articles and what the announcers said, i.e., “breathing problems” as Sean wrote.

See above. Also, in the press many people have written and/or speculated that he has asthma. I don’t know for sure whether he does but I wouldn’t be surprised.

BTW, I defend Djoko because he’s my current fave. So I stick up for him even when I am disappointed. I am aware of his faults, that he’s retired 10 times in 7 years, and more importantly that he has done so in big matches, but I still think many of his actions are not so very unusual. Other top players have retired as many times over that stretch of time, and in slams, more than once even. I feel making comparisons is fair.

Often is relative. Djokovic retires often compared to Federer. Not that often compared to Del Potro. Things should be put in perspective simply because it’s not fair to always jump down Djokovic’s throat. Roddick isn’t perfect, either, in the retiring department.

The announcers mentioned that Djoko had considered withdrawing from the Serbian Open altogether. But maybe he felt pressured to try due to it being so closely connected with him and his family?

But perhaps he should’ve withdrawn either before it began or after his first match, which would’ve given Krajinovic a walk-over instead.

I agree that Djoko retirements are not more than a lot of other players. The only issue is (as somebody mentioned above) his retirements are rarely due to injuries, it is most of the time due to other health issues so probably that is the reason he is getting some slack out of it.

Kimmi, I think you’re probably right. It’s because it’s not a typical retirement with a shoulder or knee or wrist; it’s often respiratory. That’s why if there are underlying issues he might get less flack if he just came out and said what they are. Oh well.

Did you follow the scores of Serena’s match? Whoa, she was up 40-love, serving for the match and JJ came back, twice, to eventually win.

I watched bits of the live score so did not know that serena had 40-0 serving for the match. WHOOOO! JJ is known for her never die attutide. So serena will kick herself for letting that run away from her. Happy for JJ, big win against serena anytime.

menwhile Ivanovic played great with other top players but gave a poor perfomance with martinez sanches..OK did not see the match, maybe sanches is playing like out of this world perfomance at the moment, she in the final afterall.

But great to see Ana back in the mix..hopes she continues.

Oh and Kimmi, were you able to watch Fed? He looked better as the match went on today, and by the second set, he looked like he will win the title. He was making some nice drop shots. He began with quite a low first serve percentage though; for a while in the first set it was below 50%. But he got better. I am more excited to see what happens at Madrid and the FO, though, since the fields will be deeper.

There is nothing wrong with your post about novak at all.

It is hugely disappointing that this has happened. You NEVER “dirt dig” on any player, so dont even doubt your intentions. they are always good and honourable.

Ollyk, zare and now duro (though he was on his way with sar to see the match), are so disappointed that this has happened.

Novak has breathing problems. He suffered from asthma for a long time – i have read many pressers about him and his problems in the heat, inhaler so if posters want to check that information, it is out there. Why would Jane make something up like that?

People compare players to each other all the time. It’s why we are here on this forum – to discuss.

Novak needs to get this sorted out – any retirement is for a reason – and he was having these “allergies” in Rome, so it is obviously lingering. I dont know why people dont want to show any empathy when things like this happen. It is enough when anyone’s favourite player is injured or ill and it doesn’t help when the player himself seems unsure about the reason.

I don’t think for one moment that novak retired because the other guy was doing better. It’s his family tournament! Novak would have felt a duty to play, of course, but without getting this “condition” sorted out sooner rather than later, he is fodder for the press.

Thanks jane for federer match summary. I followed the live score and that tie breaker almost gave me a heart attack..oh dear. It was SO close. I saw the second set was quick and the first serve % was better in the second.

If he got his game in the second set, I hope he plays like that in all matches. I will try to catch some matches tomorrow.

Too bad they have WTA Rome semis played today..would have loved to watch serena vs JJ for example..sheesh!

It’s understandable that we all want to stick up for our faves, and it’s commendable also, but not when we have the truth staring us in our faces as to their inadequacies. In those cases, it’s best to leave the matter alone, especially when it entails throwing dirt on other players, when they aren’t the topic of the discussion. I think you get into the comparisons as a means to detract from the gravity of what your fave does, hence the inclusion of other players’ actions. Maybe, you try to convince yourself that it’s not all that bad because other players do it, but you need to look at the whole picture. You’re only fooling yourself with the comparisons, as I’m sure most don’t buy into your arguments in those instances.

Nadal must win Madrid and Djoko must lose before the semi final in order to have Nadal as the second seed at RG. Now, Nadal can surely win Madrid but Djoko should be able to defend his semi final points too given his clay pedigree and the quicker conditions there. If Nadal just defends his runners up points from last year, Djoko will still be seeded second at RG even if he loses in his opening round match in Madrid.

His loss in Belgrade will have a negative impact of only 70 points in his rankings total and he still looks to be the favorite to take the second seeding unless his ‘health issues’ have an adverse effect on his ability to defend those 360 points in Madrid.

Just as it’s your prerogative to defend Roddick as you see fit, likewise it is mine to defend Djoko as i see fit.

I watched Djoko’s match today and I read the match reports, and I heard his post-match interview (from his mouth) yesterday; in all of these, “breathing problems” were cited. You can call this conjecture, hearsay or whatever, but imo, if I heard Djoko say yesterday that he was suffering from allergy issues and I saw his match today I can say “it *seems like* this is more respiratory” without it being like some logical leap or like I am making it up.

Tgit asked how many times Nole has retired above, and then I remembered I’d read on a site a while ago a tally of various players, and i was surprised even then that others, for e.g., Delpo, had retired more. So that’s how/why i brought in the actual numbers. I posted the stats on Djoko’s retirements too. So I am fully admitting and aware of his “inadequacies”. I have stated outright that he probably should not have played the tournament or even today’s match at all. Better to just give a walkover, especially if he knew he was feelign unwell. But I would imagine he was facing some pressure.

Von, a sore throat and allergies lead to breathing problems. How are you supposed to play a sport that relies so heavily on endurance (especially on clay) if you can’t breath right? There’s the whole Australian saying that says if you’re not fit enough to play then you shouldn’t play at all, or something like that. So would it have been better for Djokovic to have played the whole match, lost, and then blamed it on breathing problems? I don’t know. It’s a matter of opinion.

I think it was Sean who said, back when Djokovic retired to Federer, it was a fairly smart move if the problem is serious. Why finish a losing match if it’s only going to take a bigger toll on your body and hurt you in the long run?

Basically, it sucks that Djokovic retired and I hope things get sorted out for him. But I don’t know how someone could up and get rid of allergies. It’s a seasonal thing, not like a wrist or foot injury that can treated with therapy and rest. I’m not saying what he did is good, but as far as I’m concerned, Djokovic hasn’t retired in a pretty long time and I doubt it was easy to do so from the tournament he owns. I just don’t think it’s fair to jump down his throat. No one’s happy about it, but give the guy a break, he’s toughed out more than enough matches in his career.

Von, it surprises me that you’re criticizing people for the way they defend their favorites. You are the master of going crazy when someone says something even slightly negative about Roddick. Wow. Well, too bad for Nole. I guess my two cents would be I would rather as a fan ( if I was in a paid seat )I would like to see my fav go out and give it a try, unless he had a injury that he was causing more harm to play, let’s say a sprained ankle, eg;. I would understand that more than see him retire and then say “sorry” I had a sore throat and couldn’t play. It sounds like something minor and you really don’t know until you are out there and give it a try ( Remember when Sampras hurled on court at the USO? He played through it, some guys can’t, but he for sure wasn’t feeling well )

It is funny I just have gone through some allergy problems and can play but it’s not fun, and does hamper me, getting winded easily. Who can tell what is blowing in the wind every hour? And allergies can been very detrimental to some.

You would think then he should come clean and say in detail what his chronic problem is but then, he is a competitive athlete, who wants to give there competition a known disadvantage about themselves?

Not trying to defend him just can relate….

I’d rather see him give it a try for the fans nad see if he can play through it. We don’t know if he has ever said he hasplayed through it, have we? It would be pretty smug to say, yes I won, beat the guy, but my allergies were terrible?

skeezer; He’s had the allergies for over two months, at which time he let Martin go, and blamed his problems on his serve. Also, wouldn’t it be commonsense to seek medical attention? I would think that he’d be better off seeing a doctor than just talking about the allergies. Anyway, topic closed for me.

Hi Skeezer “I’d rather see him give it a try for the fans nad see if he can play through it.” I guess that’s sort of what he did and probably why he did it. He was broken immediately, but he broke back and was trying to compete, but honestly that young Serb was good! Maybe Nole felt he wanted to give it a try *especially for his home fans. I know when I have allergies I have low energy but some days are better than others so you just never know.

Anyhow, a funny report from WTF network might be necessary soon! For comic relief, ya know! : )

This must be a generation thing. I use the same terms on my friends but that doesn’t mean I don’t like them. So as far as I’m concerned, it doesn’t even come close to bespeaking hate.

Honestly, so am I. I don’t know what happened. But I did say I would back Djokovic more than anyone else once Federer broke Sampras’s record. Which ties into this:

I guess in retrospect all the wins over Federer don’t feel as bad as they once did. But I can’t foresee myself being a part of the Nadal fan club any time soon.

Djoko will lose 160 pts on Monday 10th. He only reached quarters this year: 90 pts, but he will lose 250 from last year.

Entering Madrid:

– Djoko 6970 – 160 = 6810 pts
– Nadal = 6480 pts

If Nadal wins Madrid he will add 400 pts: 6880 pts, hence Djoko will need to reach final to seccure N. 2 seeding in RG not depending on Nadal results. If Nadal reaches final and loses defending last years points, Djoko will only need to reach third round (win one match). This way he will lose 360 pts from last year but wins 45 for third round, losing 315 pts which will leave him with (6810 – 360 + 45) = 6495 pts. Topping Nadal with 15 pts.

If Djoko skips Madrid (due to recent events), Nadal must lose before final for him to be seeded 2 in RG. If he enters Madrid, he needs to win at least one match and hope for Fed do the hard work and beat Nadal again.

Interesting detail: all years that Nadal won RG he had victories over Fed on clay before RG, except 2005. Last year was the first time he enter RG not having a win over Fed on clay.
If Fed beat him again in Madrid, or Fed loses earlier and doesn’t play Nadal before French, will it be a bad sign again?! :)

Von and Ben are right.
Ben said in the past he hated Nadal, but I think it was more a thing of the moment, just like he was going crazy when Fed was losing to Andreev this year AO.

And Von used to gone crazy defending Roddick, but as she herself said, she is one of the lone Roddick supporters here and sometimes she has to stand up for him, even though she let some things passes this days.

See we all learn how to aprreciate each others differneces and how we changes as time goes by.

I couldn’t stand Nadal’s game in the past, when he only defended moon balls. Nowadays I don’t miss one of his matches and prefer when he is playing in fully agreesive mode (with the occasional crazy spin passing shots), always thought the match is in the racquet of the attacking player.

Allergies is complicated on clay.

Everytime I play on clay in more cold or windy days I don’t feel the effects on court but later. It is as if you are starting a flu, headaches and breath problems. But I never felt something in the heat of a match which, just drink water, a lot.

It doesn’t make sense to me that Djko takes September on off, there’s not tooo much pollen around at that time of the year! Do indoor matches suit him better? Serbian fans seem the most intense of the lot. There seems to ba a lot of national pride mixed up with their support of him. I agree that he needs to have a Full Medical assessment, but really. How feasible is this? With the tour being so intense? Remember last year, he was the ONE player who had played THE most tournaments. That HAS to take its toll somewhere along the line. So, this might be the catalyst for his – well – getting help. It can’t be more embarrassing to retire in your “own” country, at your “own” tournament.

Thank you for pointing out that Djoko will lose 205 points instead of the 70 that I wrote about. My calculation was based on my wrong assumption that Rotterdam was a 250 event and would,therefore,replace Belgrade in his “countable” events. Hence the net loss of 70(250-180). Since Djoko already has four better results in 500 events including Monto Carlo in his breakdown, that question doesn’t arise. I suppose a top-30 “commitment” player can’t replace a poor 250 result with a better 500 result.

Anyway,with Djoko’s withdrawal from Madrid, it is no longer in his hands anymore. Nadal has to just reach the final now to get the second seeding at RG and who will bet against that.

Tennis Player: As you can see there’s strength in numbers, and now with O-Kerr, the racist, in the picture, Maxi has found more of her mouth. She’s the laughing stock of TennnisTalk., but she’ll never learn as her MO is to divide and conquer. sheesh .

This situation has gone from the sublime to the ridiculous, and it’s fodder for the likes of O-Kerr, et al., whose problem is jealousy, because I’ve never cared to interact with him.

Presently, there are comments made by some posters on the other thread about Djokovic, which are worse that what I’ve written, but O-Kerr is not going after them because he knows which limb he can climb on and not land on his *ass, and with egg on his face.

Then we have this misfit maxi, who can’t discuss anything truthfully and logically, as her marbles are missing, and is seeking to make herself appear as a Djokovic sympathizer, even though she lambastes him to her heart’s content on other forums. As the saying goes: Oh what a tangled web we weave, when at first we practice to deceive.

I don’t know why it should bother O-Kerr as to how many children I have, and their legitimacy. My children were born legitimate, from a union of two people in marriage. I wish I know the other illegitimate children O-Kerr speaks of, as I think children are a blessing.

There’s a little clique here of the fan girls who email each other sharing and discussing other posters’ personal information. One of them has seen fit to look me up on people finder, but they found information on my mother-in-law instead, as she has the same first name and surname as I have. I suppose this is why Maxi feels I’m a menopausal warthog and O-Kerr feels I’m close to Cindy-Brady’s age. LOOL , ROTFLMAO.

Well, O-Kerr I’m glad you have met my mother-in-law when you were digging for info on me. FYI, because of where I work, my personal information is not listed in Public Records as a security measure. So you got duped big time fool. LOOOL.

Daniel, thanks for the numbers on Djoko and whatnot; it looks like he’ll be back to #3. That’s not what I am concerned about; I just want him to recuperate and be well for the slams. Also, I really liked this quote of yours:

This is true. We all go through phases and changes in perspective, and part of the reason for that may by reading all the debates and insights here. It’s generally a very productive and insightful place to post.

Nor, does it bother you when Maxi attacks without being part of the discussion, as long as she’s championing your cause. Instead, you thank her for *her nice words*, even though she was out of line. And when O-Kerr attacks me, if he posts any subsequent posts, you then agreeing with him, instead of avoiding him, for being so Lewd. In a way, you reinforce his and maxi’s behaviour. Is it any wonder why they both think of you as a *nice poster*? sheesh.

Von I don’t like the name calling. Nor do I think you or anyone should have to leave a site OR engage in name-calling. I hate all this fighting because I prefer to just talk tennis. So I bow out of it when it gets mean and below-the-belt.

Tennis Player hasn’t been exactly nice to me either Von: I am not a “goody2shoes” or a “ho,” and I don’t take “shots” at Roddick. I don’t know why s/he said that. But I chose to just let it slide.

Maxi said nice things to me yesterday, so I thanked her, just like you thanked Tennis Player for his/her support. What started between you and maxi and O-Kerr came after. I just read it all this morning.

Look, I think we all have insights and opinions to offer on tennis and if we have fun joking around sometimes during matches, that’s great too.

It’s nice to feel important jane, but sometimes our conscience should dictate our actions. As I stated, you know full well maxi’s motive, yet you thanked her.

I’ll say this much jane, if by now yolu’re not aware of how two-faced, and dangerous maxi is, you’ll never know.

I thanked Tennisplayer today, but you thanked maxi last night for her ankle biting — there’s a big difference, and you were aware of her motives. All she needs is a little opening and with support, she becomes invincible. I believe I can fly, I believe and I can touch the sky – that’s maxi.

Von, yesterday at 6:11 maxi said some nice things about Novak, so I thanked her; I wasn’t consciously aware of a motive in it; other posters were also commenting. Also, I don’t know maxi from the site TT, but here it seems that she is first and foremost a very devoted Fed fan. That’s what I see as her main objective. When I go to TT, it’s to read the predictions and match analyses – very rarely do I read the comments. And I have never posted there. So I can’t offer any insight into that.

Anyhow, Novak has withdrawn from Madrid, so I guess he was truly ailing yesterday, and his retirement must have been difficult. I just feel for the guy and wish he could be playing well again. Actually I feel for the players in general; it seems like there has been so many injured and/or ill this year.

Any tennis.x posters. I have never written a disrespectful/nasty post about any opponent of roger federer. you will never find one because that is something which doesn’t exist. Why would I want to do that. Ollyk,duro in particular i have genuine fondness for, as I do Jane and Margot. Not big fans of murray, but understand the pain these fans have gone through. Understand the pain of Novak’s problems through this fans.

I am Maxi on TT and I dont write nasty posts. On the other hand, others do. you can easily read what I say over there. Don’t just read the responses. Read the things that were said, BEFOREHAND, that then puts things into more of a context. You’re an English Teacher Jane. You know the pattern.

Feel free to look at any posts on TT. you wont find me attacking anyone, you will find some rafa fans bashing our beloved roger federer with silly squabbles, I will respond to that, but never have I used foul language or sworn. Ever.
