Bernard Tomic: “I Never Thought I’d Be Here the Second Week” [Video]

The latest tennis sensation is Australian Bernard Tomic. The 18-year-old today won his seventh match of Wimbledon beating former semifinalist Xavier Malisse in straight sets 61, 75, 64 to advance to his first career Grand Slam quarterfinal.

“I never thought I’d be here the second week,” Tomic said. “Especially in the quarterfinals. What a feeling and what a tournament it’s been for me. I’ve learnt a lot.


“I’ve never been happier. I’m looking forward to playing on Wednesday.”

On Wednesday the smooth-hitting Tomic will play the second seed, Novak Djokovic.

“What a match it’s going to be,” Tomic said. “To play against a guy like him that’s No. 2 in the world, it doesn’t get really better than that. He’s obviously won Grand Slams before. My relationship’s really good with him. I’ve hit with him a lot of times. He’s a cool guy.”

And if he can win he might have to go through Roger Federer then Rafael Nadal to claim his first Grand Slam title. Could it happen? “Well, anything is possible,” Tomic said.

Tomic’s ranking will also jump into the Top 80 when they are released at the end of the tournament.

The youngster who won three matches in qualifying beat Robin Soderling on Saturday. If you haven’t seen him play he hits the ball so effortlessly. They he has “easy power”.

Tomic was born in Germany to Croatian parents, then moved to Australia when he was three.

Tomic also became the youngest man since Boris Becker in 1986 to reach the quarterfinals Wimbledon.

Pat Cash said several times, with a kind of sickly Aussie grin, that Tomic knows how to win. He wouldn’t elaborate on this, and it seems to suggest something a bit more complicated than a fierce competitive spirit ( a la Hewitt, say). Tomic doesn’t come across as fierce exactly, or particularly Australian for that matter – his accent is not broad strine.

He comes across (on the court) as some ancient wise old lizard, which is a bit surprising for an 18 year old. You get the feeling he knows his way around a tennis court, understands his opponent’s weaknesses and is prepared to make use of his understanding. There is something cooly calculating about him. I’m not sure that I like him, but I like his tennis alright.

Djokovic must not take the match lightly against Tomic. He has to bring his A game to win. I am sure Djokovic senses the danger and plays to the script. Who knows, may be this is Djokovic’s Wimbledon although I would like Federer to win his 17th major. I will not be upset if Djokovic or Murray wins.

3 matches away. If he defeats Djokovic, then he would have play Federer and if he defeats, he will mostly have to play Nadal. Which seems “impossible”. But he’s an **incredible** talent. I fell in love with his game when I first saw it at the Australian Open 2010 against Cilic.

Djoko MUST win, 99% he will win. Otherwise who’s gonna defeat Nadal?

Bernard Tomic has saved aussie tennis. He has composure beyond his years. This is what you need to win grand slams. Fist pumping will only get you so far
