Davydenko Bakes Two Bagels at ATP MoscowPosted on October 11, 2006 Top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko needed just 38 minutes to blast Czech Jiri Vanek 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the second round Tuesday in Moscow.
With the win Davydenko becomes the fourth player this season (after Carlos Berlocq, James Blake, Andy Murray) to post a "double bagel" this season. "It was too easy today," Davydenko said. "Jiri (Vanek) was suffering pain in his back and failed to provide me with serious opposition. He was trying to make it harder for me but failed to move fast enough to challenge." The Russian won 52 of 67 points, winning 16 of 16 points on first serve with five aces and one double fault. Fellow Russian and No. 3 seed Mikhail Youhzny was not as fortunate falling to German Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-2, 7-5. Safin now faces Daniele Bracciali who advanced when Fernando Verdasco retired after the second set due to a virus. Also, Russian Igor Kunitsyn advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Rainer Schuettler. Arnaud Clement advanced posted a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Mischa Zverev. Clement's countryman Julien Benneteau, only dropped three games in moving into the third round with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Argentine Sergio Roitman.
