Nadal Pounds Roddick into Pulp to Reach First Final Since WimbledonPosted on March 17, 2007 Former Grand Slam champions Rafael Nadal and Andy Roddick met in an Indian Wells Pacific Life Open semifinal billed as an all-out battle between two of the tour's best, but the matchup did not live up to the hype as Nadal destroyed Roddick 6-4, 6-3 in just one hour and 14 minutes. The win advanced Nadal to his first tour final since Wimbledon last year, and gives the Spaniard the oppurtunity for his first title since the French Open last June. Roddick, who had not faced a break point in his prior 47 service games in the event, found himself in a world of hurt from the get go. Nadal earned triple break point against the Roddick serve at 2-all with Roddick saving the first two opportunities before relenting to drop serve to give Nadal the lead. Nadal, who played his best match in months, broke Roddick again to begin the second set, and capped off the victory by winning the final four points of the match on Roddick's serve including a match point volley miss by the American. The World No. 2 goes into his 21st career final without dropping a set throughout the tournament, and bring in a 6-1 career record in ATP Masters Series finals. His only defeat came in a five-set loss to Roger Federer in Miami back in 2005, also his first appearance in a ATP Masters Series final. Roddick was denied his chance to complete a career sweep of the four North American Masters Series tournaments. He already has won titles in Miami (2004), Canada (2003) and Cincinnati (2006, ’03). Roddick also falls to 1-3 in semifinals this year, with the loss today bringing memories of a similar beat-down at the hands of Roger Federer at the Australian Open. The 20-year-old Nadal will face one of two 19-year-olds in Sunday's best-of-five set final, Serb Novak Djokovic or the Brit-Scot Andy Murray, in one of the youngest Tour finals in years. |
