Henin, Sharapova Set Up Meeting at Australian Open Posted on January 20, 2008
No surprises on the women's side Sunday at the Australian Open as world No. 1 Justine Henin eased past Taipei's Su-Wei Hsieh 6-2, 6-2.
"She's young and you always need to have some experience to play matches at this level," said Henin on Hsieh. "But she improved a lot this past week, and she started the match today with lots of confidence. I think she learned here. I just did what I had to do, playing solidly and consistently."
Other seeded winners into the quarterfinals were (3) Jelena Jankovic (d. Casey Dellacqua), (5) Maria Sharapova (d. (11) Elena Dementieva 6-2, 6-0), and (7) Serena Williams (d. (12) Nicole Vaidisova).
Henin and Sharapova will now face off in the quarterfinals.
Third-round winners on Sunday were (9) Daniela Hantuchova (d. Virginia Ruano Pascual) and (14) Nadia Petrova (d. Ekaterina Makarova), and unseeded players Marta Domachowska (d. (24) Na Li from a set down) and Caroline Wozniacki (d. Sabine Lisicki from a set down).
On court Monday in Melbourne are (4) Ana Ivanovic vs. Caroline Wozniacki, (8) Venus Williams vs. Marta Domachowska, (27) Maria Kirilenko vs. (9) Daniela Hantuchova, and (14) Nadia Petrova vs. (29) Agnieszka Radwanska.
