Non-elite ATP Hamburg Event Lacks Star Power

Posted on July 18, 2009

The International German Open Hamburg begins its run as a non-Masters Series or "1000" event on the ATP calendar this week, reflected in its seeded turn-out, with Gilles Simon the lone Top 10 seeded player.

Other Top 8 seeds are Nikolay Davydenko, Robin Soderling, Tommy Robredo, Stan Wawrinka, David Ferrer, Igor Andreev and Philipp Kohlschreiber.

The Top 16 seeds receive first-round byes, but second-round potential matches of interest include (6) Ferrer vs. Rainer Schuettler, and...not a lot else.

Robredo (2006) is the lone returning champ in the field. Last year Rafael Nadal, currently out with knee injuries, collected his first Hamburg title, denying Roger Federer a fourth Hamburg title in five years.
