Roddick, Fish, Berdych Face Stern Tests Today in Washington

What a great line-up is on tap today in Washington at the Legg Mason Tennis. Andy Roddick headlines a schedule which includes Fernando Verdasco, Tomas Berdych, David Nalbandian, John Isner and Marin Cilic who plays Mardy Fish in just a few hours. ADHEREL

The second-seeded Roddick has beaten his opponent Thursday, Gilles Simon, in both prior meetings. Should Roddick and Nalbandian both win tonight they’ll meet Friday in the quarterfinals. I know we are not suppose to look to far ahead but I’d love to see that match.

Nalbandian easily beat Stan Wawrinka yesterday, today he plays Swiss Marco Chuidinelli.

The top seed Berdcyh won in three sets last night over Dmitry Tursunov. Today, the Czech takes on the vastly improving Andrei Golubev who just won Hamburg. Berdych did beat the Kazakh en route to his Wimbledon final last month.

Xavier Malisse will try to stay perfect against the 6-foot-9 Isner. X-Man beat Big John in their only prior meeting on the Houston clay courts in a third set breaker in April. Isner already gained revenge two nights ago beating the man who knocked him out of Wimbledon, Thiemo de Bakker, in two breakers.

Fish and Cilic meet open play in arguably the best match of the day. Cilic has won both career matches against Fish but Mardy enters this clash riding a personal-best 11-match win streak and having won 17 of his last 19. Cilic, who began the year on fire, has since fizzled with just one quarterfinal result in his last nine events.

Also today, Verdasco takes on American Ryan Sweeting, and Marcos Baghdatis faces Marchenko.

The matches today will be on the Tennis Channel live starting at 4pm ET. ESPN2 will join in on the coverage for quarterfinal Friday.

blah Says:

a marin cilic sighting! This guy dropped off since the clay season started… hopefully he can do something in american hc season.

KIMMI—you have to go to this.

Nadal and Djokovic to Team Up in Doubles Action in Toronto
August 5, 2010
World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, and world No. 2 Novak Djokovic will team up at the Rogers Cup in Toronto, Canada next week for doubles action.

Taking part in a Q&A session on the Fan 590 radio show this morning, tournament director Karl Hale broke the news. The world’s top two ranked players have not seen Tour action since competing at The Wimbledon Championships.

Nadal is a two-time champion in Canada, while Djokovic took home the singles title in 2007.

The Rogers Cup will begin on Monday at the Rexall Center on the campus of York University

jane Says:

Very cool that Rafa and Nole will play doubs!! I hope I get to see some of it on T.V. or streaming.

Sean Randall Says:

Rafa and Novak???

Rain currently in D.C. Play is delayed.

sar Says:

More info here on the doubles. Sean I’m not surprised since Barbadillo is the manager of both.

Amber Says:

Why is Isner playing Roddick right now? I thought Roddick was playing Simon, like stated in the article.

jane Says:

Yeah, I went to “from.sport” and clicked on the Cilic vs. Fish match, and was taken to the 3rd set of Roddick vs. Isner. What’s up!?

jane Says:

But there is nothing at the ATP site in live scores … I’m confused!? Doesn’t look like a repeat though they did play here last year – maybe that’s what they’re showing? The scoreline actually fits.

Kimmi Says:

Hi all,. jane, welcome to toronto!

Yes, I was lucky to go watch tennis twice. I have seen something about Kids day this weekend. Novak, Roger and rafa will do some activities..they say its free..so maybe i should go see them.

Tennistv is showing last year semi to kill time..Roddick vs isner. the courts are rained down a.t.m

sar – djoko vs rafa in doubles…rafa is very good in doubles. he had beaten doubles top seeds in some tournaments and won few masters 1000 doubles.. they could win in toronto..

grendel Says:

at any rate, if Rafa is playing doubles in Toronto, then presumably he is playing singles, too. Wasn’t there talk of his withdrawing? If he wins Toronto both singles and doubles, is he going to want to play Cincinnati? Maybe two weeks hard pounding, with a week’s rest to follow, is not so bad – I suppose it’s a question of weighing the relative risks of lack of sufficient match practice on the hc and aggravating old injuries. Play it by ear?

blah Says:

no play due to thunderstorms… all matches today are postponed apparently.

Kimmi Says:

I see isner vs mallise and hotsauce vs sweeting on court.

Kimmi Says:

berdy vs golubev on court too

Kimmi Says:

mallise took the first set.

they played in houston early this year..mallise won that match. houston is clay though.

lets see if isner can come back

hot sauce already down a break..sheesh!

Kimmi Says:

hot sauce breaks back..good.

jane Says:

Mailisse always comes close to big wins, but then he falls short. Wonder if that’ll happen again tonight (he’s bound to fall short versus Isner isn;t he? LOL). I see Hotsauce has broken back (hope he doesn’t over-play again, like he did before the FO), and that Berdy and Baggy are both in the lead – oops, no I guess Baggy’s still on serve..

Kimmi Says:

grrrrr where is the streaming?

jane Says:

Kimmi, I WISH I were in Toronto. Next year we may be out that way though. I hope you get to see the Kids day.

Kimmi Says:

jane – you could be right about mallise. he is down a break in the second set

Kimmi Says:

too bad you r not here to watch some live tennis jane. next year its montreal for the guys…but definetly welcome to toronto.

My sister is visiting at the moment. She is not a big tennis fan..she wants to go to niagara falls. I will see if i get sometime to go..it will be great to see players. especially federer my fave

jane Says:

Can’t find streaming either – there are links here:

http://channelsurfing.net/

But neither of them is working for me.

Kimmi Says:

tennistv is closed too. this is very bad. i cant believe it is thursday and no one has seen some live tennis from legg mason

jane Says:

Wow Isner leveled things quickly. I think it’s safe to say Berdy will win though Golubev is a good player; I think, too, Verdasco should win. Baggy’s match seems to be the slowest going, still locked on serve in the first set.

Kimmi Says:

ah verdasco first set..great.

verdasco is another one who is struggling. I am glad at least he won the first set.

Kimmi Says:

the guys who are playing today are lucky. at least they can play only one full match tomorrow.

for the other guys, those who win their R3 matches… will have 2 matches

jane Says:

Yeah rain delays really hurt in these smaller one week events don’t they? Glad Baggy won the first set.

Kimmi Says:

verdasco is broken…wake up!

golubev playing better this set..hanging on with the berdy

Kimmi Says:

isner in trouble

0-40 on his serve

Kimmi Says:

duece..wow

Kimmi Says:

another break point mallise

duece

if isner comes good in this game, he will win this match

jane Says:

See Kimmi, Malisse comes so close, but yet so far – a number of break points gone already. And you don’t let those slide by against Isner. of course, he’s not easy to break!

Hotsauce levels it again!

Kimmi Says:

nando breaks back. now..finish in 2. c’mon

jane Says:

Wow, Verdasco breaks back and then again. Good for him as it didn’t look like he’d get it done in two.

Kimmi Says:

nando heard me. he finished in 2 . congrats

Kimmi Says:

he struggled in this match jane. he is lucky he played someone he was able to break him back. Hope he is building his confidence s-l-o-w-l-y

Kimmi Says:

crunch time for isner / mallise

Kimmi Says:

wow fish vs cilic coming up. some late night matches today

jane Says:

They’ve put on Cilic and Fish now – guess they’re trying to get through as much as they can. Makes sense.

Looks like Berdy in trouble, Isner/Malisse heading for a deciding tiebreak?

Kimmi Says:

oooh no. 3 set points for golubev

Kimmi Says:

golubev !!!!!

Kimmi Says:

how come marchenko / bagdatis match is sooo slow..they must have some long rallies. they started at the same time, all other matches are on the third set or finished.

jane Says:

Seems like Baggy’s match is a grinder … Malisse and Isner still deadlocked, no minibreak yet.

Kimmi Says:

match point mallise jane

Kimmi Says:

mallise!! WOW!!.

contador – did u pick mallise to upset isner?

H2H 2-0 on mallise favor now.

jane Says:

Ah, Malisse proved me wrong this time, and he pulled it off! His only chance in the tiebreak he took. Good for him, not so good for Isner.

Kimmi Says:

simon vs roddick coming up…

baggy match..*yawn*

i am waiting for my buddy nalbandian

jane Says:

Kimmi, did Malisse beat Isner last week as well? Missed that if so! Good for him; he has managed to hang with the big guy.

Roddick and Simon coming on now too.

Kimmi Says:

Yap, great win for mallise. he has always had great talent. only the injuries are pushing him back. congrats to him.

Isner reached semi last year..so he will lose some points.

Kimmi Says:

mallise beat isner in houston. clay tornament in april.

jane Says:

Who does Nalby meet tonight?

Berdy has two break points …

jane Says:

Ugh, can’t stand watching scores only; don’t know how much longer I can hang out here. La la la…. where’s the tennis!?

Kimmi Says:

Nalby meets chewy..the swiss guy.

Cilic up a break against fish..

the berdy is finishing his match now

Kimmi Says:

I know jane. Its horrible. I have been following score the whole week..on a 500 level tourney. shame.

There is better coverage on 250 than 500..bizzare

jane Says:

Kimmi, Baggy blew the lead he had in the tiebreak and lost the set. I doubt Nalby with get on tonight now. Bummer. : /

And yes, bizarre that there’s no coverage; I wonder if it was scheduled for earlier but then the networks had to move on due to the rain out?

Kimmi Says:

yes, tennis tv was on when i came back from work, they kept showing old matches from tape.. i guess they has to close because of rain.

imo, they should have waited for the rain to finish. if players are waiting..the coverage should wait too.

Kimmi Says:

baggy is losing now.

aah the berdy was serving for the match..one time he had 30-0. now he is broken. now I am rooting for goubev. Go Golubev!!

Roddick down a break

Fish down a break

Kimmi Says:

golubev got broken again. The berdy should win this one now..

jane Says:

Berdy and Baggy in topsy-turvy matches. Simon and Cilic maintaining their 1 break leads over Roddick and Fish respectively, at least for the moment.

jane Says:

Yep Berdy finally wins; I wonder if they’ll put Nalby on this late? Maybe, just so they can get even a set in.

jane Says:

Nalby is on.

Kimmi Says:

yap, nalby is on.

Roddick is having some confidence issues, methinks. Simon 2 breaks to seal the set. Roddick better regroup here or else…

Cilic seem to be playing well against fish. I want to see cilic of this yr AO..C`mon cilic

Its almost midnight here…time to sleep jane. Gnite. and good lucky to all players.

jane Says:

Nalby is “on” in more ways than one. : )

Not sure what’s up with Roddick but Simon is up a set and a break.

Okay, goodnight Kimmi. Nice chatting with you, as always.

sar Says:

Yeah wonder what’s up with Roddick?

jane Says:

Simon isn’t an easy player to beat but Roddick is 2-0 over so I thought he’d probably win tonight. But Simon is one game away from the win.

sar, I can’t believe they’re putting Tipsy on so late! I hope he beats Falla, as I am still mad at Falla for beating Ernie last week ; )

jane Says:

Whoa! Nalbandian served Chewy a bagel and a breadstick. Is the sometimes-Nalby-of-yore back?

blah Says:

Alright Simon! Now just stay healthy and rested when us open comes…

blah Says:

Didn’t see the match but I am guessing Roddick is going back to his passive ways… not good for him.

jane Says:

blah, maybe Simon is back to his old form? Seems like a rough go for him this last year or so.

The Americans had a tough night: Roddick, Fish, Isner and Sweeting all lost their matches, and Querrey is already out.

Nice to see Nalby, Baggy, Malisse, guys who’ve been around for a while, win, though.

Tipsy is still trying to oust Falla in straights. Hope he can do it.

blah Says:

yeah jane, tendonitis/knee injury is not fun to deal with. Hope he will at least get to the QFs at one of the slams.

jane Says:

Simon is a tricky player; if he could just get his ranking up higher so he doesn’t always have tough matches early on at the slams, I don’t see any reason why he could reach the quarters of one of them – seems very plausible. He came close at Wimbledon, just one round shy in 08 or 09. And he’s often been successful at grinding out 3 set wins. Maybe, though, he could use either a little more endurance to do the same at the slams (i.e., grind out wins)? Or else he could try to get the wins quickly, in straights. Nice to see him at it again.

jane Says:

Oops, just checked – he did reach the QF at the AO in 2009. Lost to Rafa, the champion.

steve Says:

Yay Cilic. He’s been slumping for months now, so taking out an in-form player like Fish is welcome news.

jane Says:

Yes, that was a good win from Cilic. He’s got QF results to defend or better at the USO so it’s a good time for him to start building up some form and momentum.

guy Says:

@jane
yeah good to see simon back
don’t forget simon made QF at oz and lost to nadal holding his own pretty well, so you could say if he hadn’t drawn nadal he’d have had a good chance at a semi. yeah he was playing great in 08, early 09, but got injured.
like he implies, he’s basically a murray who just isn’t quite as good. actually i think the difference simply comes down to serve between them.

is nalbandian brewing some magic for the end of the year again?…wawrinka was a bogey man for him recently…interesting signs.

Sazzy Falak Says:

Jane, Nadal was interviewed from Mallorca airport pertaining his partnership with Djoko in tennis doubles which they talked about it a long time ago as well as his excellent relationship with Djoko.

http://dailychuckle.typepad.com/tennistoday/2010/08/rafael-nadal-is-on-his-way-to-toronto.html

grendel Says:

I like guy’s comparison of Simon and Murray, and have a couple of things to add. Murray’s serve is certainly better, if you discount his vulnerable second serve, but he is curiously reluctant to unleash it. I think Murray is marginally a better retriever than Simon, whilst Simon is now more aggressive, and more consistently effective on offence than Murray. Murray has up his sleeve wonder shots, which at critical moments in a match can swing it, and these are not available to Simon.

jane Says:

Sazzy, thanks for posting the video; unfortunately, I don’t speak Spanish and the subtitles are not in English so I couldn’t follow what Rafa was saying. : /

guy, do hope Simon can get his 08-09 form back; he does have the craftiness of Murray, how he can kind of lull the guy into a kind of rhythm and then strike. Unfortunately that sometimes entails long matches for Simon though. Hopefully he can try to use his offense abilities to end points more quickly so the tendonitis won’t flare up again.
