Kim Clijsters Honored With a Fountain in Belgium [Video]

A fountain honoring three-time US Open champion Kim Clijsters was unveiled yesterday during a ceremony in Oppiter, Belgium.

Clijsters, whose grew up in Oppiter, was present for the inauguration.

The “Kim Clijstersfontein” was designed by local artist Stefan Bongaerts who spent seven months crafting the piece which on display in Itter Square.


The bronze statue portrays Clijsters hitting a forehand, playing defense and making her signature split pose.

The Mayor, Jaak Gabriels, said the fountain symbolizes the link between Clijsters’ origins and the global superstar she has become.

Congratulations to Clijsters. There are not many active (or past) players who have or had statues erected in their name!
