Wozniacki Can Take No. 1 This Week in Beijing: Preview
The seemingly unstoppable (when the Williams sisters are sidelined with injury) Caroline Wozniacki is the top seed this week at the China Open in Beijing, which has seen the loss the three Top 5 players due to injury — Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Kim Clijsters.
ADHEREL
Wozniacki will be the favorite after coming off the Tokyo title last week, and could see a rematch of the Tokyo final in the Beijing semifinals if the Dane and Elena Dementieva live up to their seedings.
Other Top 8-seeded players are Vera Zvonareva, former No. 1 Jelena Jankovic, Sam Stosur, Francesca Schiavone, Aggie Radwanska, and Victoria Azarenka.
Other players of note are No. 10 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova and No. 12 Maria Sharapova.
After a bye, Wozniacki will open against the winner of (WC) Shuai Peng and Sara Errani.
Other opening-round matches of interest are No. 11 Marion Bartoli vs. former No. 1 Ana Ivanovic, No. 16 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova vs. Kaia Kanepi, No. 5 Schiavone after a bye likely facing Daniela Hantuchova, and the No. 2 Zvonareva vs. former No. 1 Dinara Safina in an all-Russian encounter.
Kuznetsova is the defending champ, and Wozniacki could take over the No. 1 spot on the WTA Rankings this week with a deep run. Wozniacki is 0-6 career against the Williams sisters. The only four Top 20 players missing are the Williams sisters, Clijsters and Justine Henin.
