Following Roger Federer’s brisk win over Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal came out on center court to formally accept the ATP No. 1 and the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship awards.

Watch the video of Federer walking off the court and into the tunnel where he congratulated the awaiting Nadal. Cool moment! Rafa deserves it.

“It is a big satisfaction to receive the Sportsmanship Award, voted for by my fellow players; it’s very important for me,” said Nadal.

“It’s an honour for me to receive the year-end No. 1 trophy. It’s been a fantastic season for me, the best of my career. After a tough second half of 2009 I came back this year and it was a very emotional year for me.”

Nadal won 7 titles in 2010 including the last 3 Grand Slams. On Monday, after going 0-3 in 2009, Nadal picked up his first win beating Andy Roddick in three sets.

Nadal plays Novak Djokovic tomorrow. What a match!

Here’s the official ATP video and interview:

Skeezerweezer Says:

Congrats Rafa & Rafa girls for his trophy of #1 World Ranked Player. That was one big friggin trophy!

Nice moment between Rafa/Fed also…..

Not that it matters but Rafa’s speech and english have gotten so much better. IMO goes along way for global PR. He is maturing fine, and seems like he is ready to be a leader in the game in more ways than just on the court….Vamos!

jane Says:

Congrats Rafa – quite a year!! Time to let Nole win tomorrow. Ha ha. Just kidding. Rafa loves to win and fights to win all the time – he deserves his top spot. :)

jessida Says:

CONGRATS RAFA – you are the BEST!!! Humble, talented, & SEXY!

queen Says:

BIG trophy for BIG year for BIG Rafa!

Dory Says:

Indeed Nadal speaks and expresses himself very well now. Absolute class.

Tennis Vagabond Says:

I think this is a really interesting award. For me, and I think many fans, we’ve assumed Rafa was not considered a good sport by his peers due to his on-court delays, and perhaps the occasional coaching, though I think so many players do this its probably not that big a deal. This really shows that, on a whole, Rafa’s peers, while they may not like his slow tactics, don’t consider that enough to override the other areas he’s considered a good sport and genuinely nice guy.
Congrats to Rafa. Indeed, his English has improved along with his serve, year by year, but he has always been gracious and humble.

someone Says:

He certainly does not deserve this. He even openly admitted in his win over djokovic that he cheats – i.e. wasting time between points

Vamos Rafa! Says:

Nadal is very special and unique. He is a true gentleman, a good sport, a wonderful human being, an ultimate fighter, an incredible athlete, an inspiration/a role model, ………………………… and the best tennis player at the moment. He totally deserves these recognitions/awards.

Anna Says:

Rafa is a great champion and very deserving of the Sportsmanship award and all the other recognition he’s received this fall. Years of hard work have put him at the top. Hope he continues to make good next year.
