Simon Halep is among the many new stars to emerge this year on the WTA. But none have reached the heights of the Romanian who has risen to No. 2 in the world for the US Open.

“I didn’t expect that I can get in top 10 this year, but it was my dream to be in top 20,” Halep said. “Now I’m second in the rankings, so it’s an amazing feeling for me. I”

The 22-year-old Halep has a shy persona but she’s adapting to her newfound fame and fortune. And among the “perks” of her celebrity status is being recognized more and more outside of her home country.

When asked today if people knew who she was, she revealed an officer of the law did just that.

“Policeman,” she joked. “He told me, ‘you are Simona Halep, no?’ Yes, I am. Only one.”

Halep, who made the fourth round at the US Open last year, added that she likes the courts in New York.

“The court here I like very much because it’s like my style,” Halep said. “I play very fast. I like to take the balls very early and to stay very close to the baseline. So I feel good. I had many practices here. I feel the ball. I’m pretty confident in myself that I can play good tennis.”

Halep will open Arthur Ashe court 11am on Monday against American NCAA champion Danielle Rose Collins.
