Andy Murray Explains His Move To Add Jonas Bjorkman To His Team

A year after losing Ivan Lendl, Andy Murray continues to fidget with his team. Last June he added Amelie Mauresmo and then last week he sought out the services of Jonas Bjorkman, on a trial basis.

Following a win yesterday over Vasek Pospisil, Murray talked about what led to Bjorkman.

“When everything happened with my team at the end of last year I spoke to (Amelie) about what it was that I felt like I needed,” Murray said. “She agreed. We talked about a number of people. When I said I’d like to approach Jonas, then how it happened from there was I called him up, I spoke to him, and I said, Well, for me, the next step is that you chat to Amélie and you see how that goes. They chatted a couple of times. Both of them seemed to think it went very well.

“The next step after that was, Okay, well, let’s spend a bit of time together and see if it works. Let’s see if everyone gets on. Let’s see if, you know, the direction is right.”

Murray not only lost Lendl last year, but at the end of the season he also parted with Dani Vallverdu.

Mauresmo, though, will only be with Murray at 25 weeks or so of the year, and that’s where Bjorkman can fill in.

“We’ve been having some great talks and I’m very excited to have this try-out week,” Bjorkman said to the Guardian. “Then hopefully we will all feel it’s something to build on and we can continue for the season.

“We will probably have weeks where me and Amélie will be together and weeks where either one of us will be [with Murray]. I think it will be up to Andy and Amélie how they feel the scheduling will be.”

Murray, who hasn’t made the semifinals at Indian Wells this decade, will play Philipp Kohlschreiber tomorrow in the third round.

Bjorkman will join Murray once he completed his commitment to Sweden’s version of Dancing with the Stars,

Hippy Chick Says:

Hope it all works out for Andy, and all the way to a GS title too….

the DA Says:

There you go. Hopefully this will clarify things for those who thought Bjorkman’s trial was a backdoor to replacing Amelie.

I have good vibes about Jonas, especially after the recent article in The Guardian where he outlined the plans he had/which areas he’d focus on with Andy.

Tennis Island Says:

It looks like Murray wants to be a tennis-Real Madrid. A lot of stars in his team but results are not comparable.

Margot Says:

^ Just two coaches actually, as Nole has. And because Maresmo, like Lendl, didn’t want to travel full time. As Nole’s main coach doesn’t.

Hippy Chick Says:

Tennis Island Murray has two GS,OK its not the domination of the top 3,but its still more than alot of players, who as great as they are many will end their careers without a GS,and with nowhere near the success that Murrays had….

the DA Says:

@Margot – An island is always the last to know the news. Those boats take so long to get there with the latest.

Lol.
For a moment you had me foxed there. The UK is an island and I thought, “What, what there’s news about Andy I don’t know!”
Eeeek! The shame…;)
