Andy Murray Admits, He’s Gotten Out Of Jail

Two matches and harrowing escapes for Andy Murray. The Scot who’s among the favorites has struggled in two matches needing to comeback to beat 128th-ranked qualifier Radek Stepanek in the first round in five sets then today French wildcard Mathias Bourgue again in five sets.

Yeah, I mean, today certainly wasn’t easy. I mean, you know, I lost my way on the court today, you know, for quite a while,” Murray said. “I managed to win the match. That’s what I’m here to do. I don’t want to play five sets every round and don’t want, you know, to have big drop-offs in matches.

Murray will finally enjoy a day off ahead of Ivo Karlovic on Friday.

“The positive is I play Karlovic in the next round, and physically, you know, the average rally length will only be a few shots, maybe three, four shots max,” Murray said. “So that’s a positive there.

“For sure, tomorrow I will be tired. At least I get a day’s rest now. But, yeah, you can’t continue playing matches like that and then expect to win the tournament. So if I can get through the next one, it will be nice to win it a bit quicker.”

A short while ago, Murray took to social media to acknowledge just how fortunate he has been.

Okiegal Says:

Where do they get these pix of the players? There ought to be a law against posting unattractive photos……Andy, get your act together and stop winning these matches by the skin of your teeth……You’re gonna cause Margot to have a heart attack! No fun, I have nearly had a few myself being a Rafa fan…….

Markus Says:

Hi, Okiegal! I was about to post about the TX photos but you beat me to it. Unlike you, however, I find them outrageously hilarious. And true to the spirit of TX, only Federer seems to always look glamorous.

James Says:

It seems the clay season has a second victim of tiredness / too many matches – murray. Djokovic already showed that in Rome, but now he may be in a better situation than Murray, who might just have lost his legs just a touch, just enough NOT to win the tournament. Good sign for Djokovic.

Nadal has also played quite a bit – he got a ridiculously easy first few rounds, that should help him stay fresh. All depends on third and fourth round matches for these top 3 (Djokovic, Nadal, murray) – who are also not young at all (29, 30, 29). If either of them gets two tough 3+ hour matches in a row now, they are done. Murray probably just needs one more long match to be done.

We might get a cracker of a semifinal again with Djokovic and Nadal. I still can’t see anyone other than one of these 3 winning the title, at least not yet. But let the last 16 happen, that’s when the real tournament begins when almost 90% of the “riff-raff” players are eliminated, and only in-form players are left. BTW, some of the best grand slam matches have often been 4th round or QF.

lakie Says:

After I did the bracket challenge I pointed out that Andy did not have a soft draw like Djokovic.

Wog Boy Says:

I don’t hava doubt in my mind that If Rafa makes final he is going to win it regardless who is on the other side of the net, I can’t say the same for Nole.
Judging by the Rafa’s form as of lately (from IW onwards) “La Decima” is not only possible, but probable. His focus, shots from both wings are constantly improving, they are accurate, they are deep and they are deadly, his speed as good as ever and endurance too. In one word, he is The Favorite.

Dave Says:

I would say the pressure might be to much if Nole had to play Rafa in the final, but because it’s a semi-final, I believe Nole will be the favorite and should play a good match. Not saying Rafa can’t win or won’t play a good match as well, but the difference in their meetings on this streak and especially in the last match is that Nole plays the big points better. Rafa makes mistakes at times with his forehand that he never used to make. I still see that being one thing he hasn’t fully corrected yet. The forehand is super potent again, but at times Nadal makes unforced errors on big points that never used to happen. It seems like before when Rafa played Nole that he made Nole finish almost every single point by being aggressive. He didn’t give Nole any cheap points before even though he still got pushed around at times. And with the weather not being hot this French Open, that will always favor Djokovic. If Nadal had the weather his way, I would say it would be a 50/50 match. But with the weather combined with Nole playing the big points better,I would still have to say Nole is the favorite. I still think that whoever wins that match, wins the French Open.

Margot Says:

I wouldn’t say it was “get out of jail free TBH. That match felt like a 5 year stretch.

Travis Bickle Says:

WB,

Djoker beat Rafa 7 times in a row – that’s serious stuff.
If they meet in semis, Rafa has about 10% chance and that is only assuming he has a spectacular day and Djoker plays sub-par. Otherwise Rafa’s chances are about 1 in 100. That is how big te current gap between these two is!

He’ll be lucky to take a set.

Margot Says:

Good to see he can laugh about it tho., even if I can’t!

Michael Says:

It will be too taxing to play five set matches in the initial rounds of Rolland Garros and then expect to go all the away to win the tournament will be a real challenge. Players need to preserve their energy for the later stages of the tournament where challengers will be more demanding and competitive.

Andy has definitely sensed the danger of staying in the court far too long than he would like in these initial stages. But, to his credit, despite being behind in both these matches, he stayed tough, resolute, focused and some how managed to turn the tables. Nonetheless, the later stages of the tournament may be a different kettle of fish altogether and may not provide him the liberty as he has enjoyed in these initial stages.

I think Andy’s discomfiture is good news for Novak and Rafa as well if they manage to meet Andy in the finals. Too much strain suffered in the initial rounds can derail and rock Andy’s boat as at this level, one needs all things going in your favour to turn around matches.

J-Kath Says:

I’d go with Andy’s view on tiredness. He has discounted the first five setter as it stretched into 2 days, as he said, pretty normal in most tournaments to play every day.

Next match with a big server?. I believe Andy has played Karlovic and usually won. And Karlovic was on court longer than Andy yesterday. One thing for sure, the matches today are likely to be predictable compared to Andy’s…..good news for Rafa and Novak fans.

As for Stan, he seems to have be left out of the comments…ignore him at one’s peril!

SG1 Says:

J-Kath,

You’re right. Stan’s dangerous. The champion always is. And he looks like he’s building some momentum. If anyone takes him out, they’ll have to be playing well.

As for Andy, he’ll need some quicker matches. There’s a fixed amount of mental reserves that each player is given. He’s used up quite a bit of it to get this far. Andy is tougher mentally than people give him credit for being. Coming back from 2 sets down 9 times is a statement about his character.

RZ Says:

@Markus – like you I find these pics hilarious, but I have to point out that they do sometimes post dorky photos of Fed too.

J-Kath Says:

SG1
Not sure who Stan is playing tomorrow…will look up shortly…but should be interesting. As for Andy….opinions are over the top to into the dog-house.

J-Kath Says:

Lackie

I think Steph. had the reputation to bring more to the table than his ranking implied. He’s troubled Nole in the past. I think the big surprise was the young Frenchman Mattheus….love to see him next year. Hoping Andy makes it 7-0 (H2H) tomorrow.

Baa Says:

Glam Fed only gets special treatment, even when he stops getting
slam match play and special treatment from Roddick.
Fortunately for Roddick, Pat McEnroe has resumed being
Fed’s dirt dog, now
that Pat’s not on tv to insult the so-called worst opponents for the camera.

Wog Boy Says:

Dave @ TB,

Maybe I haven’t expressed myself properly, I was talking more about final, if Rafa makes final he’ll win his tenth FO, I don’t see anybody from the other side who can beat him in the final. As for SF, Rafa is getting better by day, and Nole is yet to get better, if you follow me:)

Wog Boy Says:

^^ Dave & TB

Wog Boy Says:

^^^ and to finsh, if Nole makes final there is few players from the other side that can beat him, namely Andy and Stan, kamikaze is getting closer and closer, particularly on clay..

Wog Boy Says:

^^ but the way Nole and Andy are playing they are yet to convince me they’ll make SF, nevertheless Final..

J-Kath Says:

Wogboy:
Kamikaze? Always good but never good enuf. Crashes his final shots at the wrong target. Can win a semi-final, then runs out of ammunition. My bowed humble head opinion.

J-Kath Says:

Margot + RZ

If Andy loses tomorrow it is because he wants to save energy for his Samson performance at the Davis Cup. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lakie Says:

Maybe it is bad karma for Andy accusing players (Novak and Nadal?) of doping because of playing 5 setters?
